Indigo Girls and Jill Sobule go it alone

Jill Sobule has some generous fans, because her new album is all thanks to their support. This year, Sobule put a call out for fans to donate money so she could afford to make another record, and the total collected was $85,000.

Wow, they love her; they really love her! Sobule has just announced the fruits of her fans’ labor, California Years, will be released on her own label, Pinko Records, on April 14. Why did it cost so much? Well, for one thing, it was recorded at Henson Recording Studios, the same place Joni Mitchell recorded Blue and Carole King made Tapestry. Talk about some great history!

Also releasing their own album independently in the next year are The Indigo Girls, who were up front about being dropped from Hollywood Records after 2006’s Despite Our Differences. Poseidon And The Bitter Bug will come out March 24 on IG Recordings, an imprint of Vanguard Records. Poseidon is said to be a two-disc album: one with the new tracks in full-form, the other featuring the same tracks played acoustic. Fans, take note. The only donations the Indigo Girls will accept, however, is in form of buying their album when its available for purchase, though Jill Sobule might inspire some other artists to follow her money-making route in the future.
