Mama Berry is back. Broadway star Idina Menzel is set to return to Glee this season, reprising her role as Rachel Berry’s birth mom in what Deadline.com calls a “major arc that could span as many as 10-12 episodes.”
When last we saw Idina’s character, former Vocal Adrenaline coach Shelby Corcoran, she had reconciled with Rachel and adopted Quinn and Puck’s baby. And then – poof – like Tina’s stutter, she was gone overnight.
Deadline.com reports that Shelby’s third season return will have her coming back to Ohio from New York to be at teacher at William McKinley High School. Um, in this economic climate what school district is actually hiring new teachers? Apparently her return will complicate the lives of Rachel and Will, who had a little thing for Shelby as he does basically all female guest stars on the show (for reference please see Kristin Chenoweth, Gwyneth Paltrow, et al.).
Glee Svengali and chief fandom agitator Ryan Murphy told Deadline: “I’m really excited the that Idina is joining the family again. We missed her last year and we’re happy that she is coming back.” Her character will apparently be the new season’s only major cast addition, as series creators have pledged to cut down on the Very Special Guest Star-itis it’s thrived on its first two seasons.
So what does Shelby’s return mean for our favorite Glee Club? More drama for Rachel. More awkward romance for Will. And so much more fanfiction for Achele/Faberry fans as Quinn’s baby will be living with Rachel’s mama. So, excited to have Idina back? In my dream scenario, they also bring Cheno back for at least one episode and they reunite in an all-singing, all-dancing spectacular.
