Desiree Akhavan and “Appropriate Behavior” are up for an Indie Spirit award

This morning The Film Independent Spirit Awards announced their 2014 nominees and out writer/actor/director Desiree Akhavan was on the list. Desiree’s feature Appropriate Behavior, which was an official Sundance selection last year, is up for Best First Screenplay. The film has already won several awards at film festivals in the past year, including Best Screenwriting at Outfest, Emerging Female Filmmaker at the Provincetown Film Festival, Best Film at the Seattle LGBT Film Festival and Best Director at the Noor Iranian Film Festival.

The Indie Spirits will air live on IFC on February 21, 2015, and Desi has some worthy competition in her category, including Sara Colangelo (Little Accidents), Justin Lader (The One I Love), Anja Marquardt (She’s Lost Control) and Justin Simien (Dear White People).Dear White People is also up for Best First Feature and was produced by out writer/comic Lena Waithe.

Appropriate Behavior was recently picked up for distribution by Gravitas Ventures and will be available on Video on Demand in January.
