Archie Panjabi is leaving “The Good Wife”

In some bittersweet news, Archie Panjabi is leaving The Good Wife after six seasons of playing the kick ass, queer investigator Kalinda Sharma. The news is only sweet at all because the actress is taking off to work on her own pilot for CBS.

According to The Wrap, Archie has “has signed a development/holding deal with 20th TV, with plans for her to star on a drama pilot in the spring.” Unfortunately, this leaves her no time to film The Good Wife any further, and creators Robert and Michelle King are just as sad to see her go, saying, “Archie is an amazing actress who helped build Kalinda from the ground up as an enigmatic, powerful, and sexy character. It’s been a pleasure to write for her, and we’ll be sad to see her go; but we still have her for the rest of Season 6, so let’s not exhaust our good-byes yet. “We look forward to meeting all the wonderful new characters Archie brings to the screen. But either way, we’re keeping the boots.”

Kalinda’s fashion sense is just one thing we’ll miss every Sunday night. What was most enchanting about the character Archie brought to life, though, was her no-nonsense approach to relationships and sexuality. Kalinda didn’t (and doesn’t) identify as anything other than Kalinda, and it was refreshing to have a character like her (especially one of Indian descent) playing a skilled, smart and stunning queer woman on network television. She will be missed, but we can’t wait to see what Archie will do with her own show.

As for The Good Wife, let’s hope they continue the queerness with their recurring guest stars like Alicia Florrick’s gay brother and that we might be able to see Jill Flint, Lily Taylor or Kelly Giddish reprise their roles as is usually the case on the show. Unless they are killed, which is also (sadly) possible. (RIP Will Gardner.)

Which begs the question, how will Kalinda be written off the show? Please, Kings, don’t kill her.
