Zoe Saldana keeps coy about her sexuality

Star Trek Into Darkness star Zoe Saldana spurred a lot of bizarre articles yesterday after a tidbit from her Allure cover story quoted her saying that she was “androgynous” enough to raise a child with another woman. Clearly androgynous does not always mean something sexual, so it seemed strange to refer to her as bisexual without her having said so. Allure released more from the interview today and here’s what the actress said when prompted further:

Saldana describes herself as “androgynous.” She adds that one day she might “end up with a woman raising my children…that’s how androgynous I am!” Does she mean she would be amenable to the idea of raising a child with another woman as her partner? “Yes, I was raised that open.”

Has she had a relationship with another woman? She deliberates, then says, “Promise me one thing: You’re going to ask this question [in the article]-if you choose to, just put three dots as my response. That’s it.”

“…”

Choosing to keep it elusive does not mean Zoe has come out, and her saying she could “end up with a woman raising my children” is more akin to other celebrities who have said things like “Sure, I could end up with a woman. You never know!” than her making some sort of sexual orientation profession. Perhaps in the future Zoe will feel more comfortable expanding on how her androgyny (aka tomboy status) factors into her sexuality, but perhaps it’s just something that has yet to be explored. She recently spoke about her co-star Zachary Quinto’s coming out, saying she was so happy to know someone so “proud and strong” at such an “important moment in his life.” She must know these things aren’t taken lightly, then.

Then again, maybe not. There was this moment at the Women in Film’s Crystal + Lucy Awards in 2010 where she made this speech that was jokingly began as a “coming out” speech but ended up being about her then-fiance:

I have to thank that one special person who always gets buried and overlooked. I’ve lived a very private life, and I’ve been with a partner for 10 years who has allowed me to age (pause) which is absolutely awesome and he’s super bright, and he’s here tonight and I’m just going to come out of the closet right now. I’m going to say, thank you. I tend to confuse privacy with not saying thank you, so I love you.

One thing’s for sure: Zoe knows how to stir up some headlines.
