SyFy’s take on “Being Human” includes a lesbian character

With the New Year upon us, prepare to add a new LGBT character to your radar when Syfy’s Being Human remake premieres on Jan. 17.

The remake of the popular U.K. series about three twentysomethings – a vampire, werewolf and ghost who share living quarters – features a lesbian supporting character: Emily, the sister of the show’s resident moon howler.

Played by Alison Louder, viewers meet Emily in Episode 2 of the new Monday night scripted drama that stars Sam Witwer (Smallville) as Aidan the vampire, Sam Huntington (Superman Returns) as Josh the werewolf and relative newcomer Meaghan Rath (Prom Wars) as Sally the ghost.

For fans of the supernatural, the series grabs you immediately as Josh transforms into a werewolf. It’s not the campy greatness of HBO’s True Blood, but it’s fun just the same. Judging from the first three episodes, we know that Aidan is a 200-year-old vampire who, like True Blood‘s Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) is trying to quit feeding on humans, instead getting his blood fix from the hospital, where he works as a nurse. But Aidan has an issue with temptation and feasts on a sexy colleague. This is where the immediate drama comes in as he phones the local morgue for a clean-up, where Bishop, the master vampire who doubles as a cop, oversees.

Sci-fi fans will recognize Bishop immediately from his roles on Lost, Supernatural (on which both Huntington and Witwer guest starred) and Dexter. He’s chilling and effective as he does his best to pull Aidan back into the dark world he’s trying to escape.

As we learn more of each character’s back story, it’s slowly revealed that Josh had everything: a loving girlfriend and a bright future – he was attending medical school – and had a supportive family that included Louder’s Emily, who came out to him just before his abrupt disappearance. Scenes between Louder and Huntington are effective; Louder stumbles upon her brother while he’s on a break from his janitorial duties at the hospital in which Aidan works.

Through the first three episodes, we know that Emily is dating a “Shiksa goddess” named Jackie and is excited for her brother to meet her girlfriend. According to IMDb.com, Jackie is slated to be played by newcomer Rhiannon Moller-Trotter and is listed as appearing in two episodes.

Writing and acting performances are acceptable, with Rath’s newbie ghost channeling Patrick Swayze in Ghost; she’s cute and scenes with her late fiancĂ© mark some of the cutest of the series.
