“Sucker Punch” features an all-girl demolition army in tiny skirts

I’m about to show you a movie trailer. I can’t tell you what the movie is about, because I don’t know. I can’t tell you if the movie is any good or not, because I don’t know. What I do know is that at some point while you are watching you’re going to say, “Wait, is that a dragon?”

Yeah, I know, a dragon. The trailer for Sucker Punch debuted at Comic-Con over the weekend and damn if it hasn’t been raising eyebrows and interest ever since. Part Mortal Kombat, part Moulin Rouge, part Kill Bill, part Girl, Interrupted with a dash of Inception, the new film by the director of 300 and Watchmen gives a whole new meaning to the term Girl Power.

Details are scarce, but the story revolves around a girl (Lemony Snicket’s Emily Browning) who is taken against her will to an insane asylum where she raced to escape with her friends before she is lobotomized. Those friends, by the way, are played by Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish and Jamie Chung. Together they look like an all-girl demolition crew of former Mouseketeers gone steampunk.

Director Zack Snyder has called the film “an Alice in Wonderland with machine guns.” Also B-52 bombers, zeppelin airships, WWII soldiers, Samurai warriors, burlesque dancers and — oh yeah — that dragon. As with 300 and Watchmen, Snyder has filmed much of the movie on greenscreen with the set pieces inserted later digitally. The effect looks to be part dream, part video game.

Now, many things are cool about this trailer. Jena getting all badass with her cropped hair. That High School Musical girl picking up an automatic rifle. Carla Gugino with some sort of indecipherable accent. That chick from The Real World: San Diego actually finding gainful employment. Plus, anytime a gal in a tiny skirt launches an all-out aerial assault on what appears to be a giant monster robot with a flame-thrower, you have to tip your hat.

Still with so little in way of actual plot revealed, it’s hard to say whether this will be an awesome next step in the evolution of female action films or just another loud, busy CGI attack on the senses. Well, even if it is the latter, at least it’s an attack by a pack of cute girls, right?
