Styled Out: Taking fashion inspiration from lesbian films

The first gay film I ever saw was The Incredibly True Adventure of 2 Girls in Love. A true blast from the past (it was released in 1995 – can you believe it?) it’s a classic in lesbian cinema. Randy (Laurel Holloman) would’ve undoubtedly stolen my heart had I known of it’s existence in the time it was made. Alas, by the time my eyes grazed the cover, her stone cold butch blues did little for my libido but lots for my identity crisis at the time. Did I need to wear flannel and cargo shorts to fit into this new world I had tumbled into? Not necessarily, but Urban Outfitters should take a note from these girls since they’re so hard up for stealing every good thing from the ’90s, lately.

Moving on to the latter part of the decade, and the once current Sarah McLachlan reference that is Better Than Chocolate. I’m not really sure if I wanted to be Maggie or if I wanted to do it with her when I first saw the movie. I do know that after seeing it I promptly purchased a pair of cargo pants. Sure, they were shiny ones, but they were inspired by her and bought with the attempt and hope to lure in a lesbian like Maggie’s did seemingly so effortlessly. I mean, who gets a broad to move in and share an apartment with her and her family after two hours or so of making out? Your love is better than ice cream, Maggie. Now can I borrow that jacket? Some of you loved it, some of you despised it, but Jamie Babbit’s second silver screen sapphic masterpiece, Itty Bitty Titty Committee totally stomped on any other lesbian attempt the same year, in my opinion. I’ve said it once and I will say it again – you either wanted to be Deak Evgenikos or be with her after that film, and with good reason. Check out how successfully she fused the riot grrrl look of days of old with the hipster lesbian of today. What can I say? I’m from the Midwest and I love me some Meat. Have you ever felt inspired by a lesbian film when it comes to fashion?
