Styled Out: Seasonal looks from your closet

The change of seasons usually inspires some sort of wardrobe overhaul, whether it be small or large. There’s something about the shift of temperature that ultimately signals something in almost all of us to mix it up a bit in the clothes department.

I don’t know about you, but, since it’s early October, every other time I’ve been looking in my closet for the day’s ensemble it’s almost always met with a sigh and an urge to go wild and purchase a whole slew of things to spice up my business. For a lot of us, that’s not realistic, and is actually pretty unnecessary. By purchasing a few new pieces that work well with what you already have, you’ll save a lot of dough and feel like a whole new lady — I promise.

One of the best things you can do for your closet, when you feel like it’s in a rut, is buy yourself a shiny new pair of shoes. Whether your bag is boots, flats, heels or sneakers, this is the top cure for a vying vault. A pair of shoes can change any outfit and make it feel brand new.

If you’re reluctant to put away those ankle-length pants that you fell in love with over the summer because you can’t wear your flip-flops in 40 degree weather, try pairing them with a new pair of boots or sneakers. I really love when pants allow you to expose just a hint of some really cool patterned socks matched with awesome sneakers. Tom’s are an awesome choice because they’re affordable, versatile and best of all, every time you buy a pair, they donate a pair to a child in need of foot coverings of their own.

Boots are another really smart investment, because if you spend a couple of extra bucks and decide on a neutral color like black, brown or gray, you’ll find yourself creating new looks all over the place. I vote for leather simply for the fact that you can treat them to be waterproof and they’ll keep your toes pretty warm as the temperature continues to decline.

A new jacket can make you feel like a million bucks, as well. I’ve found that having two or three is actually ideal, not only for different lengths, but so I have different coverage options depending on how frigid the day’s forecast promises to play out, but so that I don’t “feel” like I’m pulling on the same thing every single day.

The range of prices in this department is vast, so explore your options- you might be surprised at something cool that you might find on the racks without spending a fortune. Don’t forget that anything can sort of outerwear can be easily and inexpensively re-lined at your neighborhood cleaners, so if you find some kind of vintage awesome at the thrift tore and are afraid the insulation needs an update, buy it!

Accessories are the easiest to overlook if you’re not naturally inclined to make them a part of your everyday look. You don’t need to be obvious, extravagant or extra-feminine in order to add an interesting detail to your ensemble, so don’t be intimidated. Try band buttons or a scarf, or, the ultimate in making the most of what you already have would be using this handy website to make leather bracelets from belts that have overstayed their welcome on your waist.

It also makes a good hibernating sorta project for the nights you’d rather stay in and drink a spiced ale than tear up a dance floor.
