Styled Out: Buying from gay-friendly brands

I’m not sure if you guys heard about this, but with TOMS Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie is seemingly on board the anti-gay band wagon, so you and I better start looking for better places to spend our hard earned cash on snappy shoes. Mycoski signed on to speak at Focus on the Family event, though later claimed he didn’t know what the organization was about.

It’s really unfortunate because obviously Tom’s does some awesome stuff for less fortunate folks around the world. They’ve also become like some kind of standard in many a lesbian and hipster’s wardrobe. So even though Mycoskie has backtracked, it’s just a reminder that we need to know where our gay dollars are going.

Kenneth Cole, for instance, is rated high on the homo support system so you can most definitely feel good about this shoe purchase.

Generic Surplus is an awesome company that offers up – you guessed it – a super similar option at just a little bit higher of a price. I know not everyone supports a knock off, but in this case, it’s totally worth it.

Another offender that you may or may not be aware of is good ol’ Urban Outfitters. The worst part about the entire thing is that the dude who runs the entire operation is a huge Republican who supports anti-gay marriage candidates and who could care less about which artist he might be ripping off. Why not support smaller and more original clothier? I am a huge fan of Threadless for all your tee needs.

Nordstrom and Macy’s are awesome LGBT supporters as well and will keep you “outfitted” from head to toe, in a way you can feel good about.

Hey, guess what? You’re not even safe when you’re thrifting! That’s right. My once beloved Salvation Army is now dead to me because as a “practicing homosexual,” I’m not welcome in their organization. Well, thanks a lot. I’ll take my cash right on over to Goodwill, the lesser of the two evils. They don’t exactly have a squeaky clean track record, but it’s nearly flawless in comparison to The Salvation Army’s outward hatred and intolerance.

I still cannot believe that Target hasn’t redeemed themselves, even after they were this close with the proposed deal by Lady Gaga. SMFH.
