Sesame Street is no stranger to famous folks. Performers, athletes, and politicians have all stopped by to talk about important causes or sing songs or just hang with the Muppets.
But the appearance of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor seems especially noteworthy – perhaps because, as Lisa McElroy from Dorf on Law writes: “When we were kids in the 1970s and envisioned a more inclusive America, this is what we imagined.”
Well said. Take a look.
Justice Sotomayor’s presence is significant, and not just because she gave preschoolers a lesson in what judges do and how compromise works. She appeared first in street clothes, simply as Maria’s friend – a regular person hanging out having a cup of coffee. She also just happened to be a member of the highest court in the land, a position she earned through hard work and intelligent decision-making.
Little girls watching the Justice don her robe and consider the “case” before her probably weren’t thinking, “Hey, I’m a female of color and I can be a Supreme Court Justice when I grow up.” But they got the message just the same.
Of course, it’s just a matter of time before Fox News picks up on the story as proof that Justice Sotomayor is soft on crime and a puppet of the administration, but I’m holding on to the warm fuzzies while I can. Thanks for showing us you rule, Madam Justice.
