Snap Judgment: Will lesbian-tinged “The Roommate” flop or rock?

Back in 1992, Single White Female made a big splash with its creepy (and campy) tale of devotion to a roommate gone horribly wrong. Critics may not have liked it, but it did give some of us a nifty new shorthand to use when referring to our crazy ex-girlfriends. The film was bursting with murderous lesbian subtext, and it was lumped in with another movie from 1992 about homicidal lesbian/bi women, Basic Instinct.

The Roommate, slated for release in 2011, looks like it may be revisiting the same celluloid territory. According to SlashFilm.com:

The film stars Minka Kelly as a college student named Sara who finds her safety jeopardized after she’s assigned to a dorm room with a new roommate, Rebecca (played by Gossip Girl‘s Leighton Meester). The film co-stars Alyson Michalka (Easy A, Bandslam), Cam Gigandet (Twilight), Matt Lanter (90210, Sorority Row), and Danneel Harris (One Tree Hill, The Back-up Plan). The film is directed by Denmark-born filmmaker Christian E. Christiansen (Zoomers) and was written by The Lake House/The Strangers producer-turned-first-time-screenwriter Sonny Mallhi.
It may not sound like much on paper (unless you’re a Meester/Kelly fan), but the video has some spectacular moments.

Lesbionic mind-reading (“Pancakes.” “That’s what I was thinking!”), a fuzzy kitten (“our secret”), a scary shower scene (who rips out a belly button ring?!), and Meester making out with a blonde. Watch the trailer below and tell us what you think: AfterEllen.com founder Sarah Warn once wrote that angry lesbian/bi women do better at the box office than the happy variety. Maybe that spells success for The Roommate.

Will it be schlocky lesbionic fun? Infuriating exploitation? Will the kitten live? Will you even care about any of this after watching Meester make out with the blonde on the big screen?
