Sigourney Weaver and Alicia Silverstone sink their teeth into “Vamps”

Take a three-time Oscar nominee. Add one of the hottest starlets of the ’90s. And mix it all together with the female director of some of the most iconic teen comedies of the past few decades and what do you have? A movie about vampires, duh.

Sigourney Weaver has joined Alicia Silverstone in the cast of Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Clueless writer/director Amy Heckerling‘s new feature film Vamps. Press material for the film describe it as “the modern day tale of two young beautiful female vampires living the good nightlife in New York until love enters the picture and each has to make a choice that will jeopardize their immortality.”

Vampires in love? Gosh, that will never sell to kids today. I mean, who wants to watch vampires — oh, wait. Silverstone and Krysten Ritter (She’s Out of My League, Veronica Mars) will play the two young vampire friends. Weaver, meanwhile, will fill the role of Ciccerus, “a bloodthirsty ‘stem’ vampire who has created a dynasty.” Um, neat.

Now vampire fare has been anything but funny business of late. Twilight, True Blood and The Vampire Diaries are all dramas with romance. Buffy the Vampire Slayer melded action, comedy, romance and drama. But you have to reach back to the ’80s when Heckerling’s first film Fast Times at Ridgemont High was released to find the last real examples of vamp comedies. But those films like Once Bitten, Vampire’s Kiss and Love at First Bite were largely silly, bordering on camp.

Which begs the question: What kind of vampire movie will Vamps be? Campy? Silly? Or seriously good stuff? With a cast like that, let’s all hope for the latter. And Weaver’s addition bodes well. She can play serious (hello, three Oscar nods) and seriously funny (Ghostbusters, Galaxy Quest, Baby Mama). And, well, we know if need be she will also kick the ass of anything that stands in her way, alien or otherwise.

Heckerling has an overall stellar track record, too. But she also wrote and directed Look Who’s Talking. So, you know, talking baby. What do you think? Is Vamps crazy or just crazy enough it might work?
