We told you earlier this year about a new film featuring out lesbian actress Sarah Paulson: Martha Marcy May Marlene — a movie that made a huge impression on those who saw it at Sundance for its stunning performances and chilling story.
Martha Marcy May Marlene is the tale of Martha (Elizabeth Olsen), a young woman who escapes from a violent cult in rural New York and tries to return to a normal life with her sister Lucy (Paulson).
Martha continually has flashbacks and seems to be losing her grip on reality. Clearly, her time in the cult did far more damage than she first thought. John Hawkes, Oscar nominee for Best Supporting Actor in Winter’s Bone, plays the creepy cult leader.
As the film goes to Cannes in Un Certain Regard category, the studio released the chilling trailer.
Olsen, who happens to be the Mary-Kate and Ashley’s younger sister, gives a remarkable performance that critics predict will earn her an Oscar nod. Slashfilm’s David Chen, who saw the movie at Sundance, writes, “As far as I’m concerned, Olsen’s performance here is a tour de force, full of depth and complexity. Olsen’s Martha displays deep insecurity, painful ambivalence, and a stunning amorality that is haunting to see in a fellow human being.”
Olsen looks a bit like Vera Farmiga, with a touch of Maggie Gyllenhaal, don’t you think? She and Paulson and the ominous story add up to a must-see movie for me.
Martha Marcy May Marlene will be released in the U.S. in October. Will you be there?
