Sarah Michelle Gellar stakes another TV show

Buffy herself is returning to TV. OK, not the vampire slayer, but Sarah Michelle Gellar has signed on to front a new drama pilot for CBS. Please allow me to express my excitement almost entirely in acronym shorthand: ZOMG, SMG on TV is 2G2BT!

According to Deadline.com, the pilot (titled Ringer) is being penned by Supernatural writer-producers Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder. Deadline reports that the hour-long pilot will follow a “troubled young woman (Gellar) who, while on the run from the mob, hides out by inhabiting the life of her wealthy twin sister, until she learns that her twin’s life has a bounty on it as well.” She would play both roles. Double your SMG, double your fun.

This would be Gellar’s first return to TV since Buffy the Vampires Slayer ended after seven seasons in 2003. She was attached to an HBO pilot a few years ago that wasn’t picked up. Instead she has focused on films and raising her daughter year-old Charlotte with husband Freddie Prinze Jr. But Buffy fans have long waited and hoped for her return to the small screen.

No other stars are attached yet, and the drama pilot is CBS’s first greenlight of the season. So that bodes well for the network’s excitement about the project. The premise is interesting and the opportunity to see Gellar play two roles is enticing. And Supernatural fans should be happy to see Charmelo and Snyder behind the project. Well, I’m on board. Everyone knows Gellar is a real ringer when it comes to TV.

So are you excited? Is this project a worthy successor for the slayer? Discuss.
