Sapphic at Sundance 2013

Every year, the Sundance Film Festival clues us into what films we can anticipate hitting our theaters (or, these days, video-on-demand) in the near future. The festival has a long history of being queer-inclusive, and 2013 is no different. There are several movies of interest based on their characters, storylines, directors or actors. Even if you can’t attend the fest this week, here are the films you can hope are picked up by distributors at the fest this year.

Out director Stacie Passon‘s film about a lesbian housewife who gets hit in the head with a baseball and becomes a prostitute. Rose Troche produced the film, which sounds like an excellent drama.

Bisexual director Lynn Shelton employees Your Sister’s Sister‘s Rosemarie DeWitt again for her new film, which also stars Ellen Page. (Page also stars in the Sundance film The East.) Jill Soloway has worked on some of the best LGBT-themed shows, including Six Feet Under and The United States of Tara, and her first full-length feature has her BFF Jane Lynch in a role as a therapist. (Lynch also plays a therapist in another Sundance film: A.C.O.D.) June Diane Raphael plays the lesbian gyno on New Girl, but in Ass Backwards (a film she co-wrote with BFF Casey WIlson), she visits a lesbian commune and assumes everyone there wants to sleep with her.

Out director Francesca Gregorini wrote the autobiographical film that is decidedly about mother issues of all kinds. Kaya Scodelario and Jessica Biel star. Out actress Evan Rachel Wood stars in this film alongside Shia LaBeouf.

Out director Cherien Dabis brings back Alia Shawkat for another film, but this time, Cherien stars in the film as well. A documentary about the infamous feminist trio that was imprisoned for speaking out against their Russian president.

Any of these sound like must-sees to you?
