24-year-old actress Rooney Mara has won the race several young actresses have been in the running for over several months. Rooney has been cast as Lisbeth Salander, the bisexual ass-kicking hacker at the center of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its subsequent sequels.
Mara has been acting in 2005 but has only appeared in a handful of films, including Dare, Youth in Revolt and the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. She has a part in the upcoming The Social Network, a film based on the creation of Facebook, which David Fincher, director of The Girl…, worked on as well.
Deadline reports that Mara has signed a deal for that includes “an option for two sequels that will cover The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest,” much like Noomi Rapace in the Swedish versions of the series. They also write that Fincher was looking for an actress that was in her young 20s and had the right body type. Despite other young actresses having similar attributes, it appears Rooney had the upper hand by having worked with Fincher on The Social Network. Surely that can’t be all, though — she’s also a talented actress who isn’t afraid to take on such a hefty role.
The part of Lisbeth Salander was highly coveted because the books and Swedish films are huge international hits and it’s very rare that we see women (especially women who sleep with women) at the center of it all. Lisbeth is strong, smart and is able to survive against all odds — and, boy, are they stacked against her.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is scheduled to arrive in theaters December 21, 2011 so filming should be underway very soon. Can you see Rooney with a cropped dark ‘do, facial piercings and a huge backpiece with the signature dragon tattoo? She’s really going to have to commit to this and, if she does, it will make her career.
