RachelWatch: “Glamorously Bonkers”

Today: Rachel hosts a game show and Tracey Ullman drops by the studio.

Normally Friday seems to be the designated anything-can-happen day on The Rachel Maddow Show, but every now and then some Wild West joy spills over into Thursday.

Fasten your seat belts.

Rachel led off with a look at President Obama’s box ’em into a corner strategy of forcing the Republicans to publicly demonstrate their support for big banks and big business.

And, yeah, they’re going to have some tricky explaining to do, assuming they go on networks that require them to explain things.

The strategy of driving a wedge between the Republicans and the Tea Partiers is an interesting one. There’s been a longstanding suspicion that mainstream Republicans only pay lip service to hard-right values, but as long as Republicans can get votes and Tea Partiers can push their agenda, it’s easy to maintain the polite fiction that everything’s cool.

But they do have some serious differences over the government’s relationship to Wall Street, and — assuming the Tea Partiers are inclined to do so — it’s going to be harder to do the mental gymnastics necessary to believe that the Republicans are only cuddling with big finance to enhance their marriage with ordinary citizens.

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: Don’t wait

Hey, we’ve got movement! Or something that looks a lot like it. Fingers crossed.

Rachel noted that the Republicans seem to be having a little trouble with modern history. Specifically, their own.

It’s almost hard to blame them, since so many media talking heads buy right into the notion that Republicans are the party of fiscal responsibility and Democrats will just get superhigh and blow the entire national budget on Slim Jims.

Rachel pointed out the naked attempt to start a “Blame it on Bush” meme, hoping people will believe that the past year was in no way influenced by the previous eight.

I assume they’re also hoping no one will remember that fourteen months ago the Republicans were scrambling to distance themselves from Bush like he’d been rolling around in plutonium. When did they decide he was awesome again?

Last I heard, at the end of the Bush White House party the economy woke up in a pool of its own vomit and someone had shaved off one of its eyebrows. That’s a lot of photos for the Republicans to untag.

Rachel decided to shatter a few stereotypes through the magic of game shows.

MSNBC, I can’t help but notice that you are in need of some original weekend programming. I’m just saying.

Tracey Ullman’s State of the Union

Holy wow, I still can’t believe I saw this interview.

Tracey Ullman dropped by the studio to make Rachel wonder if there’s a word for when you’re charmed and wildly embarrassed at the same time. Delortified?

Ms. Information

Rachel gave us an update on the trial of Scott Roeder, the man who admits to killing Dr. George Tiller in cold blood. Roeder’s defense had, in the hopes of getting a manslaughter verdict, argued that killing a man in his church was justifiable homicide, but the judge has ruled that the jury can’t consider manslaughter and must deliberate on a murder charge.

Rachel also reported that speakers and sponsors are pulling out of the Tea Party Convention because of accusations that the organizers are just trying to make a profit and that surf and turf at the Opryland Hotel might be a step or two away from the point.

Amazingly enough, Sarah Palin is not one of the quitters. Well, not yet.

Press has been banned from covering most of the convention, but you know what conservatives love? Crusading young people with concealed video equipment.

Dress-Up Mess Up

Speaking of young firebrands who have more electronics than sense, master of disguise James O’Keefe tweeted about his case in spite of a reported gag order.

Since he already has an attorney, maybe Mr. O’Keefe should invest in a few question-and-answer sessions for reference.

“Yes, that law applies to you.”

“Yes, that law also applies to you.”

“Amazingly enough, that law applies to you too…”
