Last week, roc mentioned in her Project Runway preview that Marie, one of the models on Bravo’s hit reality show, identifies as a lesbian on her MySpace page. AfterEllen.com asked Marie a few questions about her life and career.
AE: When did you come out?
Marie: I had known for quite a while, but I guess I finally came out when I was about 20 years old. I came out to my friends first, and then maybe over the course of a year I came out to my (surprisingly) very supportive family.
AE: There seem to be a lot of lesbian or bi models out there — do you agree? Why or why not?
Marie: I’m not so sure there are "a lot" of openly out models, but hey, the more the merrier … just kidding.
It definitely seems almost trendy to be gay nowadays, but at the same time, many models, as well as others in the entertainment industry, are not open about their sexuality for fear that it will hinder certain work opportunities.
Personally, I am not too concerned with other models’ sexuality. I just want to be myself, work a lot and have fun!
AE: Who are your modeling role models?
Marie: Carolyn Murphy, Shalom Harlow and Mey Bun.
Carolyn Murphy is an amazing woman who knows how to balance work, family and fun. (i love that she too is a surfer.)
Shalom Harlow has been around forever in this industry and is still working it out! I only hope I can be as long-lasting and versatile as she is.
Mey Bun is my best friend and my inspiration. In an industry where most girls are trying to fit into a specific mold, Mey inspired me to just be myself and to have fun doing what I love.
I aspire to be a combination of these three women, working in the fashion industry for as long as possible while maintaining my individuality and eventually balancing work with family and frequent surf sessions.
AE: Your MySpace page says that you are in a relationship; is this true? How long have you been with your girlfriend?
Marie: Hmm … I’ll leave this one for you girls to ponder.
Project Runway airs Wednesday nights at 10:00/9:00c on Bravo.
