The BBC is reporting that British singer Amy Winehouse was found today in her North London home. Winehouse had struggled with alcohol issues and went into rehab this May, but left the clinic to tour before completing treatment.
I am a longtime fan of Winehouse. The passion and pain in her voice, as well as the raw and soulful nature of her lyrics, have always moved me. Her Back to Black album is one that hasn’t left my Top Ten of All Time list since it was released in 2006. To my surprise, a few years ago my father called to ask if I’d heard of her and to tell me how much he loved the record. My dad hadn’t bought new music since probably 1966, which speaks volumes about her ability to appeal to fans of all kinds of music and across generations.
I’m so very sad to learn that her name will be added to the long list of gifted musicians who died too soon. Though she only released two albums, I have no doubt that her artistic influence will be felt for years to come.
Here are some pictures to remember her by.
