Gay women like to wear tuxedos – get used to it

Monique Verdin lives in Houma, Louis., where her high school has a rule when it comes to prom attire: “Tuxes for boys and gowns for girls.”

But Monique prefers to don a tux, and Terrebonne Parish area high school said they would bar her from entering the dance if she did so this coming Saturday. Her dad got involved and the press was alerted, so now the school has changed its tune — at least the school board says so after receiving a letter from the ACLU. Monique will now be allowed in, wearing this tux she’s picked out special for the event.

Monique’s story is just one victory out of a handful of others that have been able to reverse their school’s discriminatory stance on clothing and gender expression. She follows others like Ceara Sturgis, Sarah Lloyd, Sarah Lindstrom and Desiree Shelton who have fought for their right to be themselves and wear the tuxes they want to wear in their yearbook photos and school dances and ultimately won with the support of their peers and their local communities.

Because of Monique’s victory, we figured it’d be a great time to celebrate with lesbians in tuxedos — because we look so damn good in them.
