Disney and Annie Leibovitz make magic once again

Sometimes Disney reminds us that they are worthy caretakers of “happy ever after,” this time in the form of a new series of photographs by lesbian photographer Annie Leibovitz for Disney Parks.

The images are the latest in a campaign that started in 2007, featuring some of our favorite celebs in scenes that bring fairy tales to life. Past stars include BeyoncĂ© Knowles, Scarlett Johansson, Rachel Weisz, Julie Andrews, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Lopez, Whoopi Goldberg and others. My personal favorite was Tina Fey as Tinkerbell. This week Disney released three portraits in a new series called “Let the Memories Begin.” The first puts Fey compadre Alec Baldwin in a reflective pose as the image in the Magic Mirror mirror on the wall with a disturbingly wicked looking Olivia Wilde as the Evil Queen in an iconic scene from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Recreating a final scene from Beauty and the Beast, Penelope Cruz plays the lovely Belle rejoicing with Jeff Bridges as her no-longer-beastly love. I give Jeff big props for managing to look at her face. Queen Latifah, who obviously is having a blast, rides the waves as Sea Witch Ursula from The Little Mermaid. I don’t think I’d care to run into her on a dark and stormy night, although she certainly makes a lovely sea monster. We can look forward to a yet-to-be-released portrait of Patti Smith as a pirate, which couldn’t be more perfectly cast. You can get a glimpse of her in a behind-the-scenes video of the photo shoot, available at the Disney Parks website.

I’m excited that Disney is continuing this campaign — proof once again that they know a lot about making magic. And they know to call on a lesbian photog to help make it.

Who would you like to see next in this series? Yvonne Strahovski as Rapunzel? Kathryn Prescott as Nala? Sara Ramirez as Cruella de Vil? Discuss.
