Sad news: Norwegian Handball players and longtime partners Gro Hammerseng and Katja Nyberg have split up. A press release confirmed this today, as both women play on the Larvik handball team and are internationally recognized sports stars.
The team’s general manager Bjørn-Gunnar Bruun Hansen commented that the team is currently playing in Germany, but Katja is injured so she is staying home. He also said he believes that one of the women will move out of their shared home in Larvik, which they recently purchased together. An executive chairman for the team also remarks, “They have both said that there is no problem to train and play together. They are good friends even if relationship is over.”
Gro and Katja have been favorites on AfterEllen.com for the past three years. Both women placed on our AfterEllen.com Hot 100 and were part of the winning Olympic handball team in 2008. The same year, we voted them Best International Couple in our Visibility Awards.
We are sad to hear of yet another high profile lesbian couple splitting up and wish both women the best personally and professionally.
