Dear AfterEllen Readers,

We are all thrilled that you are here reading the site. We appreciate your loyalty, your unapologetic opinions and feedback, and we strive to bring you the content you want. Because you connect with us, we want to connect with you right back. That’s why we are introducing ourselves in a new column, “15 Things You Didn’t Know About Me,” where we’ll profile an AfterEllen writer each week.  Here at AE, we feature guest bloggers and numerous freelance writers, but we have a core staff who regularly contribute to the site, and we’d love you to get to know them a little better. First up, writer Karen Frost.

Karen Frost has been writing for AfterEllen since January, 2016. She’s the one who’s been bringing you all those detailed, juicy, and might we add witty commentary-filled Wynonna Earp recaps. She also writes political commentary, think pieces, and frequently critiques the way lesbians are portrayed on screen. See her byline and articles HERE. And here are 15 things you didn’t know about Karen Frost, but now you do.

15 Things You Didn’t Know About Me

1. I was a four sport athlete at Mount Holyoke College: soccer, ice hockey, fencing, and dressage. I’m also a second degree black belt in Shotokan Karate of America. Sports are a huge part of my life.

2. My dream job was always to write for AfterEllen. Now that I do that, I’m still trying to convince the world it needs a Celesbian Sherpa. Call me, Hollywood.

3. My favorite city in the world is Paris, but Tanzania is the best vacation destination and Bangladesh will always be where my heart lies because of my time living there.

4. I’ve probably been at least one girl’s worst first date story.

5. I’ve learned eight languages since high school, but I still read all the English subtitles when watching non-English speaking fictional lesbian pairings, so thanks to all the subtitlers who have dedicated countless hours to making lesbian couples more accessible to viewers around the world!

6. I literally cried into my cat’s fur for 10 minutes after watching Silvia’s ghost cameo in a later season of “Los Hombres de Paco.” Pepa and Silvia are my OTP.

7. I believe very strongly in lesbian representation on screen and in print because I know the impact that it has on queer women individually and collectively, and it is my #1 goal in life is to see that everyone involved in increasing representation be recognized for their positive contribution.

8. I watch “Love Actually” every single Christmas; I’ve seen it 13 times. At this point, I might as well be the third nativity lobster.

9. My favorite lesbian movies are “Kyss Mig,” “The World Unseen,” and “I Can’t Think Straight,” but I like TV lesbian couples better on the whole.

10. My Master’s degree was in Languages and Cultures of (South) Asia.

11. Actresses like Katherine Barrell and Tainá Müller or the official Twitter handles of movies or TV shows tweeting responses to my AfterEllen articles have been among the proudest moments in my life because it affirms that they are awesome allies who understand that the queer community values their role in the creation and portrayal of lesbian characters and storylines.

12. My life is covered in cat hair (I have two cats, Romeo and Juliet).

13. I’ve lived in Washington, D.C. for almost eight years. My favorite date is to get hot pot and then go to the Alamo Draft House for a caramel milkshake and bottomless popcorn.

14. I spend 70% of my waking hours thinking about pop culture and lesbian things, which drives my girlfriend nuts because it’s all I talk about.

15. I’m working on a YA fantasy novel with a lesbian protagonist, but it’s slow going. The finished chapters so far are up on Wattpad.

Editor’s Note: Karen is the only writer I acquired from the previous editor, and thus she has been with me the longest. She keeps me on my toes and is filled with energy, ideas and insights. AfterEllen wouldn’t be what it is without her. Thank you, Karen!
