10 Last-Minute Valentine’s Day Date Ideas

Getty Images The “official” day to celebrate love with your significant other is February 14th. The history of Valentine’s Day can be traced back to ancient Rome, when St. Valentine, or Valentinus, decided to go against Emperor Claudius II‘s idea that single soldiers made better soldiers, and began performing secret weddings between the privates and their lovers before they went to war.

The legend suggests that when Claudius discovered Valentine’s treason, he incarcerated him, and while in prison, he sent the first “valentine” greeting to the girl he fell in love with. According to historians, Valentine sent one last letter to his love before his death, which he signed off with “From your Valentine,” an expression that we still use today.

Although some people see V-Day as yet another PR stunt to get consumers to spend ridiculous amounts of money on cards, flowers, candy, jewelry and other apparel items – statistics show that 150 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas – others choose to jump on the love wagon and create memories with their better half.

If you fall into the latter group of people, you came to the right place! AE has gathered up some rather simple last-minute date ideas for you to wow your valentine and spread equal love on Valentine’s Day, or you know, 365 days a year. After all, we are all about spreading the love in our community, right? 1. The “classic,” better known as “dinner and a movie” Sometimes less is more. Also, sometimes your partner just wants you to pay attention. How many times has that movie trailer come on TV and she’s said, “Oh my God, I want to see that movie!”? Make a dinner reservation at her favorite restaurant and surprise her with tickets for that film she’s been dying to see. 2. The modern version of the classic, better known as “Netflix and Chill” If you are trapped in the snow – like we are in Long Island – or the day is too crappy for outside activities, grab her favorite take out on the way home – and a bottle of wine – and binge-watch that show you always say you’ll watch but you are always too busy for.

Go check their offers today or tomorrow morning and find something that you and your significant other can enjoy trying together. The list can include miniature golfing, arcade for grown ups, laser tag, paint night, bowling, dance lessons, and many other activities that you may or may not know are offered in your area. 4. The “let’s support our local community” Whether you live in a big city or a small town, local activities may be offered to support the arts on a daily basis. Check your local listings to find out if there are any local bands playing somewhere, art galleries exhibitions, local breweries or wineries offering tastings, etc.

This can be accompanied by homemade dinner, dinner reservations at her favorite restaurant, or take-out, whatever you think your love would enjoy the most. 7. The “young forever” Remember those days when you used to go bar hopping, hit the club, dance all night, and ended up at some random diner eating burgers and disco fries? If you are up for it, surprise your lady with a trip down to memory lane and recreate one of your favorite dates from the past.
