It’s official: My dreams from the ’80s have come true – Kelly McGillis has confirmed she’s here and queer so get used to it. The woman took our breath away as Tom Cruise’s love interest in Top Gun but most recently did a bang-up job of portraying closet case Colonel Gillian Davis for two episodes of The L Word.
McGillis told SheWired.com the next time she’s in a relationship it will “definitely” be with a woman. “I’m done with the man thing,” she said. “I need to move on in life.” There has been speculation regarding McGillis’s sexual orientation for years. In 2000, Kelly starred in Samantha Lang’s film The Monkey’s Mask, playing a bisexual murder suspect. This role sparked more rumors but McGillis wasn’t too concerned about it – perhaps because the underlying truth would eventually come to surface.
The 51-year-old has been divorced twice (the last marriage ended in 2002), but it took until now to gather the courage to come out publicly. “I think that was an ongoing process from the time I was probably 12,” she said. “I find myself now at 51 kind of starting my whole life in a different phase. I don’t know what’s going to happen.” Hey, better late than never, right? You’re never too old to pursue your own happiness.
Now that her children are grown, McGillis said she might try to return to the screen – as long as she isn’t asked to dye her graying locks or get a boob job. “I love acting, I love what I do so much, but I don’t want to do it at the point of losing who I am and what I believe,” she said.
One thing is for sure, if McGillis doesn’t want to go back to acting full-time, she should have no problems doing copy editing for fortune cookie writing, as she also told SheWired, “Life is a freaking journey about coming to terms with who and what you are.”
