Yo Majesty play musical chairs

Yo Majesty is an anomaly in the music industry. As an all-female, lesbian, Christian hip-hop group, they’ve managed to make a name for themselves with fans of all genres. Songs like “Club Action” got them attention with hipsters and hip-hop heads alike, and UK label Domino Records took henotice and signed them, releasing their critically hailed debut, Futuristically Speaking: Never Be Afraid, in 2008. It’s unfortunate, however, that the original trio (Jwl B, Shunda K and Shon B) turned into a duo after a spat, and Shon B dropped out, while Jwl B and Shunda K continued to tour. But a recent allegation of violence put Jwl B in jail temporarily, which left Shunda K to perform as Yo Majesty on her own. Now that Jwl B has been released, it seems as if the drama will continue, as Shunda K has reportedly left the group, and Shon B is back in.

The good news is that Shunda will continue to record and perform on her own, but she maintains that she is “not sad, but relieved at how easy it is for me to move on since I am Yo Majesty and know in my heart dat without Shunda K there is no Yo Majesty!!!”Something tells me that the other group members didn’t find this to be true. No matter what the issue is, it’s sad that such a talented group of women can’t continue to work together to make dance hits like “Booty Klap.” While the new formation of Yo Majesty will be touring with their beloved tracks, Shunda K has already moved on to record her own EP, which is available for free download on her website.

At least none of them have sworn off the industry all together. Whatever incarnation Yo Majesty is in, I’ll be interested to hear what they’ve got up their sleeves. Are you a fan?
