Marriage Equality Wins the Day!

June 26th, 2015 will go down in history as the day that all Americans, regardless of sexual orientation, are finally equal citizens in the land. Love won out. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of equal marriage, which means that whether you live in Alaska, Texas, New York or anywhere in the U.S, your marriage is valid. Take a moment to bask in that. The term “same-sex marriage” is no longer needed. It’s just marriage now, people!

While we were hoping for good news, and it was the more likely outcome, it’s still thrilling. Supreme Court judges Kagen, Sotomayor, Breyer, Ginsburg (love you RBG) and Kennedy all voted in favor of equal rights, with Kennedy writing the majority opinion, with the other judges, sitting firmly on the wrong side of history.

A major debt of gratitude goes to lawyer Mary Bonauto who made the argument for marriage equality, as well as Jim Obergefell and the brave plaintiffs in states across the US where marriage between same sex couples was not legal.

President Obama, a supporter of equal marriage, had this to say about the ruling.

“This morning the Supreme Court recognized that the constitution guarantees marriage equality. In doing so, they’ve reaffirmed that all Americans are entitled to the equal protection of the law. That all people should be treated equally, regardless of who they are or who they love.”

He went on to say that this decision was a victory for not only those who have been fighting for equal marriage but for all of us.

“And this ruling is a victory for America. This decision affirms what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts. When all Americans are treated as equal, we are all more free.”

Of course, social media was a flurry of excitement and here are some tweets from our favorite folks in support of this historic ruling.
