Iggy Azalea had a swell time performing at the 2014 Budweiser Made In America Festival in Los Angeles on Sunday. Not only did she enjoy the company of her “Black Widow” duet partner Rita Ora, but she also had some fun with one of her female dancers. Just recently Rita Ora said she wanted to kiss Iggy Madonna/Britney style during their VMAs performance, but Iggy didn’t want to be cliche.
What’s interesting about Iggy is that she is not at all interested in being “fake bisexual,” as she sees some of her peers. While performing at the huge Palm Springs lesbian fest, The Dinah, this year, she did her song “Drop That Shit” and danced provocatively with a female dancer (much like in these photos), as the song is all about appreciating the strip club just as much as men do. But in one rhyme, she makes it clear: “Dayuumm baby got the fattest ass/I ain’t gay so problem is I’ll have to pass.” Another rapper on the track, Problem, later says, “Iggy I know you just got to this light but that bitch right there so bad you should be bi for one night.”
It’s interesting because Iggy is an ally, much like the aforementioned Madonna and, to an extent, Britney Spears. She loves her LGBT fans and has performed at lesbian and gay male parties alike. She identifies as hetero (“I love gay people, but I’m straight. I don’t wanna kiss girls. I’m not into girls.”), but when it comes to the stage show, I don’t mind her appreciation of the other women she’s performing with. She’s forthright about her motivations for rapping like she does about women:
Which is exactly what some of her eyeroll-inducing cohorts in the music industry tend to do. (See: “I Kissed a Girl,” Nicki Minaj‘s early career) Iggy isn’t trying to tap into a gay audience for money and fame. Instead she’s honest about her intentions in celebrating other women in music, and she’s happy queer women can get into that without her having to say she might be interested in having sex with them.
So if you’re into Iggy like I am, we’re in good queer company. It seems out bisexual model/actress Amber Rose is also a fan.
