The USWNT wins the Citrus Bowl and more from the week in women’s sports

It’s time to catch up with what’s going on around the world of women’s sports. We’ve got a few of the highlights covered and links so you can be sure you didn’t miss anything.

First we’re going to start with women’s ice hockey. Saturday Team Canada captured its thirteenth gold medal at the Four Nations Cup in Lake Placid. Canada beat Team Finland 6-3. Team USA finished third by beating Team Sweden. espnW.com ran a profile on Julie Chu, one of the players on Team USA who is hoping to compete in the Sochi Olympics. If Chu makes the cut it will be her fourth Olympics. She hopes that she and Team USA can bring home a gold medal from Russia.

Also this weekend, the U.S. Women’s National Team took on Brazil in the Citrus Bowl and came away with a 4-1 win on the strength of two goals from Sydney Leroux. Abby Wambach and Erika Tymrak added a goal each. The win caps an impressive year for the U.S. and takes its unbeaten streak to 38 games. The U.S. has no more matches scheduled for the year but we can all look forward to the team being back in 2014.

Finally, USA Today ran a long article about the glass ceiling for women’s college basketball coaches. The article, which is long but worth reading, starts with a discussion of the only three women who have been assistant coaches on men’s college basketball teams. The article tackles why women’s coaches don’t try to cross over into the men’s game in the same way that men’s coaches have been moving to the women’s game. One of the things it cites is women not applying for jobs in men’s basketball. If no women apply, it puts the burden on male coaches to scout out female coaches.

But the article goes on to note that women may not be interested in pursuing jobs where they think they will never be able to be the head coach. I found the article to be an interesting reminder of the unintended side effects of Title IX which brought more men into coaching women’s sports without driving equal numbers of women into coaching men. Let us know what you think of the article in the comments.

So there’s your sports round-up. If there’s something you think we should cover, don’t be shy, let me know.
