Morning Brew – Winona Ryder on being gay bashed

Good morning and Happy Friday!

Did you know Winona Ryder was gay bashed when she was in junior high? She tells V magazine about the time a gang of kids thought she was a boy:

I was obsessed with Bugsy Malone and had cut my hair short. I remember the halls were empty and these kids started shouting “faggot,” and I didn’t think they were talking to me. Walking home after leaving the nurse’s office-and I’ve never talked about this-I remember pressing on the bandage because I wanted it to look more dramatic. I had this inner monologue going of Humphrey Bogart, like, “being roughed up!” I was pretending I was in some gangster movie. It was oddly my way of dealing with it, because if I didn’t, I probably would have been really scared.”

CNN has a piece from a professor of psychology who says you should not take your kids to see Blue is the Warmest Color.
…as a sex researcher, a university professor and a mom who has seen the film — is: “Are you kidding?!” I would not recommend anything so vivid portrayed by a same-sex or opposite sex couple to any young person, particularly one who was not already sexually experienced.

If you have not yet sat down with your kids to look through pictures of sexual positions and intercourse, having them watch this movie would be a strange place to start. “Blue Is the Warmest Color” is not family entertainment. Its [sic] athletic, rough and tumble sexuality can look aggressive, even frightening, to an inexperienced young person, and it is hard to explain to many teens why that might also be loving.

This is kind of making me LOL. “Rough and tumble!” Well, sex researcher mom, some sex lives are like that. Deal.
