Queer Women in the House on UK's "Big Brother 10"Angel, a 35 year-old professional boxer from London, is openly bisexual, and a little ... odd:
Forgot the strange "Arthur or Martha" description — I'm still trying to wrap my head around the idea of a war between the fit and unfit. (Seems like it would be a pretty short war.) It's for strange ideas like this (and her rather unconventional appearance) that Angel is already disliked by many Housemates and viewers, which doesn't bode well for her tenure in the Big Brother House. A third contestant, 27-year-old beauty consultant Saffia, kissed a girl once and liked it, but appears to be considering sleeping with women just because she hates men:
The show's marketing department misspelled Katy Perry's name, but never mind. The point is, Saffia's not likely to win any Miss Congeniality awards anytime soon, as she's already illustrated in her first week on the show, and neither Channel 4's marketing department or Saffia herself seems to understand that hating men and being gay/bisexual are not really related. In an episode of the show last week, Saffia declared, ''I'm not gay, I'm not bisexual,'' then went into a rant about all the bad men she's been involved with, and concluded, ''Maybe I am gay!'' I hope not. Despite these three women's respective personality challenges, they all managed to avoid becoming the first one evicted last week — that honor went to a woman named Beinazir. While there is more representation of queer women on this season of Big Brother than there has been in awhile, it's questionable whether this representation is actually beneficial to lesbian/bi visibility, since these particular contestants arguably do more to promote negative stereotypes about lesbians and bisexual women (as sexual predators, man-haters, unlikable, indecisive, etc.) than to challenge them. But reality shows aren't in the business of trying to change society, they just want ratings. Well-adjusted contestants don't make for good drama or good ratings, which is why few contestants of any sexual orientation come off looking good on shows like this. It also seems from the bios that the show's marketing department is more to blame for aggressively reinforcing those stereotypes than the contestants themselves. Regardless, perhaps over the next 15 weeks viewers will see past the hype and the stereotypes and get to know Lisa, Angel and Saffia as more well-rounded individuals. If we don't all die in a war between the fit and unfit before then. Well..
There is a hot straight girl called Sophie in the house which is making us all watch BB10. Do an article on her instead! :P
You're so wise. You're like a miniature Buddha, covered in hair.
:')
you do make me lol mate xD
i agree.
BB10
and i have to say that yes, its a bad representation
but then again its typical of big brother to put in steroptypes etc.
it's how the whole show works
i'm a little disappointed as mainly my 'peers' as in kids at my school
seem to have negative views about all three of them
its not having any positive effect, more of a negative one as far as the kids at school are concerned
though i think the people themselves aren't really too much like their BB bios mentioned
but only time will tell
=/
however there are other girls in the house that make it worth watching *cough*sophie
big up lisa the brummie
Big Brother
i Agree with one of your last paragraphs - no one comes out good in these shows.
Since i watched the Israeli version of this show i have to say there has to be soemthing wrong with you to go to this show to start with, and of course it is the show's best interest to focus on everyones worst parts.
Its like this for gay or str8.
well
i have no idea if i should be proud or sad. but only time can tell if they do any justice on representing lesbians/bisexuals.
90 people get the swine flu, everyone wears masks; Millions of people get AIDs, no one wears rubbers.
First Big Brother UK
The first BB back in 2000 was the only one that held any interest for me, I'm afraid. That first one was more of a social experiment, something that featured a bunch of fairly ordinary people in what was then a new situation. Subsequent ones have been filled with people who are in it because they want to be celebrities, and each year the makers try to choose people who are more 'outrageous' than the year before. I doubt any of those first housemates would get into the house these days.
The runner-up in that first BB was Anna Nolan, a lesbian. When she came out of the house, to thunderous applause and cheers from the crowd, she was greeted by her girlfriend and they were then told that they had won a romantic holiday for two. I didn't begrudge the actual winner, Craig the builder, since the reason he was there and wanted to win was so the money could be used to help pay for a heart and lung transplant for a friend of his with Down's Syndrome. And Anna didn't do at all badly out of it either. Apart from the romantic holiday with her girlfriend, she parlayed her moment of fame into a career in the media. oh dear
Just before Lisa came on I hoped there'd be a lezza then she came on and I realised I'd made a mistake!
she seems so full of herself...but she does have a lovely smile lol
she makes me cringe sometimes and when her hair's not spiked it looks all flacid and funny :P
Angel is awesome though she's weird but I love her :P
I'm like a retarded fairy, you want to love me but I'm too goddamn weird

Lisa
I was hoping the same, wanting a lesbian and then Lisa came on. BUT, I actually like her. She's sensible, down to earth, opinionated but in a nice way.
Angel is weird, and I'm not too sure of my opinion of her.
It seems like every other person is gay/bi/unsure this year, including the men.
Interesting choice of people too.
:)
Lisa seems to be doing ok for herself, although I have only seen the launch night so far (The Apprentice last night = much better option :D) as for Angel, well yeah, she scared me a bit :| Saffia is just annoying. It's not surprising though, anyone remember Kitten? She was one of my least favorite housemates ever, and she was the last lesbian on the show! I guess the upside is that Big Brother's all for equality; they choose psycho heterosexual people too! Yay! :|
I must admit though, I loved Noireen (sp?) on the first night, thought she was cool :)

Hmmmm
I hate the way that in all the papers Lisa's defining characteristic is that she is a lesbian - The Sun used 'jobless lesbian', as though her sexuality in itself makes her strange...
However, I am glad that she's there...and I kinda fancy her...
I think Saffia is doing more damage to the reputation of queer women with her attitude that if she hates men she must be gay...we're not all bitchy man haters...
And the jury is out on Angel...I liked the top hat!
I want Lisa to win!
I never listen to things they say, cos what you hear gets in your way (Joan Jett)

I'm a Brummie myself, and
Angel
Noirin
before I even watched the
I watched them going in on
I watched them going in on launch night and was hoping for something that represented something to me. Far stretch maybe but I always remember the lovely lesbian ex nun on series 1 and that was the first 'real' lesbian I had ever seen on tv and it was inspiring. But this year they seem to have gone back to the crazy lesbian type. I think her first words were something about changing straight women (as you do). And it only got worse with Angel who again is very odd and the bi girl with a vendetta against men, its so predictable its just boring =(
http://anothergalanotherplanet.blogspot.com/
This is how bored I am..
I've actually started watching Big Brother again this series. I'm glad I don't have E4 at the moment, so I can't be tempted to watch the live coverage.
I don't mind Angel actually, especially after last night's episode when she showed her softer side in the diary room. I quite like Lisa as well, she's not as bad as her bio makes her sound. I really don't like Freddie. It annoyed me when he said he was bi because 'After a few drinks, anything goes' or something along those lines.
Anyway, guess it's too soon to judge, so for the sake of forming an accurate opinion I'll have to keep watching :P
Prefer to drive...
Prefer to drive your car crash reality TV lesbian representation with a seat-belt, airbag, crumple zone and closely attending paramedics? - Then might I heartily recommend yesterday's screening of 'Celebrity Wife Swap".
Again, it was on UK's Channel 4 and you can still watch it (
initiative-testgeo blocking permitting) onhttp://www.channel4.com/programmes/celebrity-wife-swap/catch-up#2920446
and features out Scottish comedian Rhona Cameron and her partner.
Warning - seriously, you really will need to put that airbag underneath your chin for one or two of the 'views' expressed!
Can I just point out...
The show pulls in more than half a million viewers. The most they've pulled in was just over 5 million viewers on the first night and around 2 million on other nights. Okay, now I've got that out the way lol...
I like Lisa so far but her accent annoys me, I don't know why. And she doesn't seem to be 'turning' any of the straight girls like she said she was going to lol. I thought Angel was a bit weird a first but I'm starting to like her especially after she cried in the diary room after trying so hard not to and when she cried after becoming an official housemate, aww. Saffia's rather loud and chatty and something bad is going happen between her and Sophia, I can feel it, they hate each other!
Am I the only one who finds Karly really attractive? It's her toughness that I like, she's feminine but tough, it's hot!
I like Lisa. Didn't think I
I like Lisa. Didn't think I actually would! Angel scares me. Saffia's an idiot.
Go here for my view on all things lesbian: http://allthingslesbeau.blogspot.com
Well
I only watched the launch night, and I'm not sure why, I've not watched any BB for years. When Lisa and in particular Angel were introduced it was one of those moments when you just have to sigh and mutter 'oh for f*** sake'. I could just tell that it was going to have a negative effect on the lesbian community...but I don't believe that's entirely their fault. I think these 2 minute or so introduction videos are suppose to be slightly shocking and the housemates, without fail, come across as obnoxious, in your face, arrogant people. I guess that's the nature of the contest. I just hope they redeem themselves and I hope the media don't focus on their sexuality above all else.
"Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, f*cked up brats you spawned to replace yourselves"
LMAO!!
The last sentence in the article had me laughing uncontrollably!!
I'm going to have to try to find some way to watch this show - maybe online somewhere. I love BB :)
I LOVE ANGEL!
i dont know whats wrong with me i just love angel!
i know she is a freak but i just adore her! her entrance made me cringe but appart from that i think she is adorable.
It was so sweet she was rly upset last night n was resting her head on lisas shoulder, if they got together that wud be kl but i dont think she is lisas type..... :|
angel to win!
xxx
If I'm honest
I'm actually scared of Angel.
Even watching her dunk her biscuit was scary. But I still watched. I think that's what you call 'Loser' behaviour.
(She's from Russia, btw. Which only amplifies her creepiness)

You know you want to.Lisa ' is Awesome (BUTCH)
Will u miss me?
O God! It's so inspiring to see Lisa and she got that butchy butch looks and the man inside her. I am 100% sure even straight women must be falling for her. She is amazing! I would love to watch their show'. I can't wait to see her on sets!
hmm
ya know i have mixed feelings about this whole thing because i think when it comes to lesbians and bisexuals on the telly we can't win! Lisa comes on and everyones like f***s sake typical stereotype, but can you imagine if they had had a proper femme straight looking lesbian everyone would be moaning about that then wouldn't they. I think we should all stop moaning because the fact is a lot of lesbians look like or similar to lisa it aint a stereotype for no reason, at least they do in brum where i live and where shes from and from what ive seen on the show shes given a good account of herself shes exactly what i want to see tbh yeah she looks that way and ya could be put off but when you get to see how she behaves shes cool, down to earth, generous and quite smart what more could you want. Im hoping it makes people think a bit cause she isnt acting how the stereotype and how she looks would have you assume and therefore it could be a positive situation in the long run. Course its early days and she could become a complete nightmare but as someone who has an affinity to birmingham and especially its lesbians i am for 1 hoping she goes far! On another note the bus stop is making me lmao, the 11a outer circle bus stop is the one about 2 yards away from where i live, apparently its one of the longest in europe!

I hate Big Brother
Never watched it before, can't stand most of it now...however, I have developed an alarming crush on Lisa from the snippets I've watched...
What's wrong with a shaved head? I find it sexy personally...
Not keen on the Brummy accent though, lol
I never listen to things they say, cos what you hear gets in your way (Joan Jett)
