Sia's Coming Out

"He's such a partier, I'm terrified I'm going to be revisiting some old habits," Sia said. "But my music is slow — it's easy listening and whatever. Sean is an entertainer; he will strip for the people. He's really engaging and charismatic. I've got the fancy costumes and black lighting and s--- so we just try to make it a good live show with a Capital S!"

Having recently moved from Los Angeles to New York City, Sia soon will be leaving her new home to tour, which she says will make her a little homesick.

"It's f---ing amazing," she said of her new city. "I live in Soho. I thought I lived in Chinatown, but people kept telling me I live in Soho. They made me Google it and then I realized I am — I'm in Soho, and I've got a really nice pad! I used all my money from the advance for this record, and it's really amazing."

Because she hails from Australia, friends warned her she wouldn't take the East Coast winter too well, so she packed up her dogs and headed back to Los Angeles a few weeks ago — but she didn't stay long.

"I missed my love interest too much, so I came back," she said.

As someone who is so open about herself and her life, Sia said she is having trouble being so discreet about her exciting new relationship.

"I'm trying to be respectful," she said. "I've never really dated anyone who was really private. I'm used to being really open about all my relationships, but I know that for her it's an issue."

Later on in our conversation while Sia is describing her coming-out process, she busts out singing: "I'm coming out! Bum, bum!" She adds, "It's fun — it's like a whole new sort of subject to study now."

Adorable...

Very nice interview... it's sweet to see someone so refreshingly open and honest about their feelings and about who they themselves are.

I look forward to seeing what Sia's future holds.  I've been somewhat obsessively listening to Breath Me, Day Too Soon and Little Black Sandals lately... all great tunes!

Thanks for the interview and all the very best to Sia and all her future endeavors... may she always remain as enchantingly open and ebullient!

Love Sia

I love Sia's albums so much... I've been waiting for her last album since she announced it was out in January and i was so glad when it finally came out. It was worth the wait.

Thanks for that very nice interview :)

Good on ya

I've been listening to Sia's music for a few years now....and always secretly hoped she had a touch of the queer in her.....so I was pretty pleasantly surprised when she came out! I wish she finds her way as it can be difficult but I think she has the right idea...honesty!

My favourite song of hers is Where I belong....simply magnificent. And from her latest album Buttons and The Girl.

I wish her all the best

I knew it :D

I had the pleasure of meeting Sia back in October.

I took my mum out to the concert for her birthday and Sia was sweet enough to sign a random book (Moll Flanders) as a present for her.

Weird thing is, after meeting her I couldn't help mentioning that she might be just the slightest bit gay. Chock it up to sensitive gaydar?

Just glad to know I was right.

I hope things go well for her - she's not only an incredible singer but a very sweet and wonderful person.

I'm listening to her now on myspace

This is the first time I've ever listen to Sia's music. She's a gifted singer with a surprisingly great voice. I hope she blows up big. She's got new fan. I think it is so beautiful she's discovering herself and is coming out especially in the press. A big ups to her. Sia, congratlations on finding yourself. I hope you continue on your new journey.

see no evil, hear no evil

She really seems to be a lovely person.. its jut that the whole naive thing worries me a bit .. shes somebody that i would just want to hug and shield her from the world cause im not sure she realizes the possible negative feedback she may get .. and im guessing it isnt all going to be rainbows and lolipops unfortunately.

dear Sia .. just stay out of the South and you should be just fine : )

After hearing 'Breath Me' I

After hearing 'Breath Me' I decided she must be at least a bit gay, I'm glad I was right.

She sounds like my straight girlfriend - Although she wouldn't take so well to hearing "her boyfriend is a girl".

Gotta pick up her new album.

For some reason

For some reason I've been convinced for years that Sia was gay!

She's very cute, and her music is beautiful. Great article!

Very sweet...

She is so sweet! I recently stumbled upon her music and I'm hooked. Very good article!

That's great

I like the way she came out or is coming out. I do love her music and I like her videos because they are unique.

Awww

Sia seems a real genuine person, and I have to agree with everyone else she is very talented. It'd be nice that this time next year she got big, well i'll still be a fan either way :)

I also love how open she is about her American love interest, and how she must really respect her to keep things underwraps.

Great article :) x

I discovered her when I

I discovered her when I heard 'Breathe Me' on the promo for The L Word (second season) here in The Netherlands, back in 2006. So it already was a really gay song for me, and now even more. Anyway, great interview, she seems really down to earth.

sia has real problems

funny thing sia didnt mention ....that her boyish "love interest" was in a committed relationship with a wonderful women while she was stalking her.maybe this is how most straight women work?
editrix's picture

Refreshing.

How playful Sia seems, both in her music and in this interview! It's so refreshing.

I bought the boxed set of Six Feet Under last year, and it included the show's two soundtracks. The first included a song called "Distractions" by Zero 7; the second included "Breathe Me," which was how I first heard of Sia. Little did I know there was a reason I was addicted to those two songs: Sia.

If anyone is interested in checking it out, you can see the video for "Distractions"  here.

Sia sounds like the idiot

Sia sounds like the idiot that she is. I can't believe she's 32 and still so stupid about contracts and relationships. She'll reap what she sows.

I should really learn to trust my gaydar!

When i saw her live last year i was watching her and getting such strong vibes! I thought about it and ended up dismissing it.

Im more tuned in than i thought!

Sia is awesome!

Starbucks Goes Lezzy!! :)

I am so excited to see that Starbucks is supporting the GLBT community!!  I was in there the other day and I thought the cover of her album was cute, so I asked about it.  Everyone there working said it was a pretty cool album.  :)  I am so happy to see such a sweet girl right in the midst of the coming out process and a musician at that!!

YOU GO GIRL!!

sia and zero 7

must get this out frst: hands down, seeing sia in NYC was the best live performance i have ever seen. no kidding. she's absolutely adorable and just seems genuinely happy to be doing what she does. ok -- cheese time over. :)

unless i'm mistaken, sia did NOT provide the vocals for zero 7's in the waiting line, as this article suggests. she did, however, provide vocals for other zero 7 songs: distractions (my fave), destiny, somersault and something else, possibly.

anyone else have more info to share on this subject?

I LOOOOOVE SIA

She is a beautiful person. I saw her in concert this past saturday with my mom and sis. it was amazing!!! she was definitely representing (she wore a rainbow scarf)

She is lighhearted and silly yet has a soulful resonance in her voice and rockin vocal ability. Some of her songs make me want to cry(You have been loved) relating them to my own experiences and others make me want to stride happily down the street(buttons, girl you lost to cocaine). Pop is fun again!

Her Coming out was just icing on the cake for me. I adore her.

Celina's picture

The cute girl from Adelaide.

I wish I had read this before I got to meet her on Feb 16. I saw Sia in a little private acoustic concert with like fifteen other people at noon. Then later that day at her sold out concert with HarMar Superstar. Both were amazing but I liked the acoustic performance better because it was more intimate, (not drunk screaming people). Sia even signed my pass for the private concert. She is so cute and bubbly and small, I'm 5"2' so we we're about the same. Before she sang The Girl You Lost to Cocaine she said 'this is for all the lezzies', that's when I was like thats me. It would have been great to talk to her about this afterellen piece maybe next time.

I heart Sia

I love her, her voice is so beautiful. Intersting how she met her 'love interest' (cute) on myspace.... i think ill open an acount up, fingers crossed!

Sia is Brave

I always thought she was a lesbian because of her songs, but I have just been confirmed.  It is hard to admit that you are gay in the entertainment business and she is very brave to walk out of that lonely closet.  She's a beautiful person and wonderful singer/songwriter so I am proud to have her as a fellow lesbian.

I like innies, not outties.
