Interview with Patricia Resnick

AE: You have an incredible story about being at a wedding reception with then First Lady, Nancy Reagan. Can you tell it?
PR:
Well, I got very drunk. At the reception, [a friend] was wondering if anyone would cut in on the First Lady – she was dancing with the groom – and offered five hundred bucks to anyone who would cut in. I thought it would be an easy five hundred, so I went over and I tapped [the groom's] shoulder and asked if I could cut in. And Nancy put her arms up, and off we went to "Embraceable You." And we slow danced until the song ended.

And the next morning – and this was pre-internet – [the groom] called me from his honeymoon and said, "I guess your dancing with Nancy Reagan made it into Liz Smith['s gossip column.]"

In those days, it was not easy to get a hold of news; you had to actually physically find somebody in New York to [get the newspaper and] read it to you. I didn't know what it said!

It took me a couple of hours to track it down, which gave me time to sit there and think: "Oh my God, what is it going to say? Is it going to ruin my career?" I didn't know how people were going to take it. I really scared myself.

We tracked down [the newspaper], only to find out it was all good humored. Everybody thought it was hilarious. It didn't say, "Drunken Dyke Attacks First Lady."

This was my alcoholic bottom. I thought that maybe I shouldn't really drink in public. And I decided, about a month after that, maybe I shouldn't drink at all.

AE: Just say "No."
PR:
And I did.

AE: Was being gay in the 70s and 80s a problem? Were you out, then?
PR:
I never came out, because I was never "in." It was just a fact of my life and it's funny, but it didn't really come up that much. I didn't go into this and say, "And by the way, I'm gay," but it was pretty much common knowledge. I certainly never hid it.

And I had girlfriends at the time and they'd go to parties and business things with me. But because I had never written anything with gay themes, particularly – even though Nine to Five has a big gay following – I was never really identified [as gay.] So, they're always honoring lesbians in the business and I'm like…

AE: You mean all eight of them?
PR:
[laughs] I've been here a really long time! No one ever associates that with me.

AE: Where have you been, Pat?
PR:
I've been right here.

I love this movie

I love it.  Seriously.  I should have known it was so great because a lesbian was behind it.  I get teary at the end where the main characters talk about how far they've come and how we're all going to get equal pay...all these years later...still unequal, but I feel like I don't want the characters to know that.  They're just so strong and hopeful.  It sounds like they would have been even greater had the original script made it through.  I think this sounds like a great project and I sincerely hope it comes to LA (eventually).

Great interview, Dara!

Really enjoyed the show in LA and will hopefully get to see it on Broadway.  Such amazing talent all around in that cast and crew, Ms. Resnick definitely included!
Funny story about Mrs. Reagan and great addition finding the article!  Lord, don't know if my brain would function just talking to Dolly let alone being serenaded lol  Thanks, Dara!

Great Interview

"...at some point you have to stop arguing with success."

This is a great interview. It's always interesting to hear how something as iconic as "9 to 5" fell together. Patricia Resnick is an amazing woman to have lasted in Hollywood all this time. And big congrat's to her on the Broadway play!

CLassic

9 to 5 is one of those movies I watch at least once a year, and one of those I always stop on if it pops up while flicking through the channels.

It's nothing to brag about, but I do the same with Smokey and The Bandit... not the tv edited version because it butchers Jackie Gleasons whole performance. Don't judge me! :-)

That's really all I've got to say. Just the right questions, and very inspiring answers :) Thanks!

You didn't even take your clothes of, yet you've never looked more naked.

9 to 5

I'm sooooooooooo excited to see this in New York! It's all i've been bugging my mom about for the past year! I love love love stephanie J Block and Megan Hilty!!! They are amazing to the theatre world! It's funny cause both girl's were in productions of Wicked...which is also popular amongst Lesbian audiences cause it's all about strong female characters and their connection to one another. I'm so glad that you are including Broadway related news on this site now. And interesting factoid...Marc Kudish (or however you spell his name) was engaged to Kristin Chenoweth for 3 years before they split in 2001. And you all know that Kristin love's the gays! :-) Props for posting about something Broadway!

Awesome interview!

This was my favorite movie as a kid and is still one of my favorites.  I was born in 1976 and, honestly, as a kid I wore out my VHS copy of this movie.  I've been meaning to buy it for awhile and just added it to my Christmas purchases on Amazon.  Seriously, we should buy ourselves something for Christmas, right?

Loved the interview!  Patricia Resnick -- You rock!

Nine to Five Musical

Broadway so need something fresh. Nine To Five musical. Should be interesting. The movie did rock.  80s movies rocked. I like Dolly Parton and Lilly Tomlin anyways. I have gone to see Dolly Parton in other movies.

So a Lesbian writer was behind the success of Nine To Five . You go,PR!
