2008 AfterEllen Visibility Awards: Nominations Now Open!
Each year, AfterEllen.com gives out Visibility Awards to honor the best and worst of lesbian and bi visibility in entertainment for the year (revisit previous awards here: 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004). This year, we want your input! Many of the category winners are still going to be editorially chosen, but we're inviting you to nominate and vote on some of them, as well. This will be a two-part process. From today through Friday, Dec. 5, you can enter one nominee in each category per ballot. You do not have to submit a nominee for every category. You can re-submit the form with a different nominee in the same category, but duplicate entries for the same nominee in the same category by the same IP address will be discarded. So no ballot stuffing! We’ll compile the nominees and the next week, we'll present you with up to five nominees in each category, from which you’ll be able to vote for your top choice. Winners will be announced in mid-December. We've listed examples of potential nominees for some of the categories — these examples do not represent an exhaustive list of options, just some names and titles to get you started. For the first time this year, we're also creating separate categories for shows and people outside the U.S., to acknowledge the achievements in lesbian and bi visibility in other countries. (If a category is not designated as either American or Non-American, it is open to entries from all countries). When you're done nominating, feel free to come back and tell other readers who you nominated in the comments! For easier sorting and counting, please enter the full name (correctly spelled) of the movie/show/book/person you are nominating, and don't add any extra commentary in the form fields. Thanks! NOMINATIONS ARE NO LONGER BEING COUNTED. THE FINALISTS WILL BE PRESENTED TO VOTE ON NEXT WEEK. name; $echoedstring = ''; echo "$echoedstring"; ?> |

My picks
I nominated:
Still trying to figure out my favorite books...
Do TPB count as Fiction Books?
For Fiction book I put: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 Volume 3: Wolves at the Gate TPB
I have no idea if that counts, but I think it deserves an award of some kind. It's the whole Satsu/Buffy arc.
Yay, I don't have to wait for the Hot 100 to vote for Rachel Maddow in something. LOL And Keith Olbermann is my straight ally.

The Best Thing About This Is...
I had a really hard time choosing!
That's a good thing. No matter who wins, I think this is a competition where we can sincerely say it's an honor being nominated. It's a crowded field this year, with a lot of quality options.
Afterellen Website Issues
www.myspace.com/lunakiss7
I pushed the submit button and the website had an error message popped up: too much lesbian processing . The site went down for a few seconds . So do I need to resubmit my answers?
Me too
Ok, I resubmitted my Answers
www.myspace.com/lunakiss7
There it's done my resubmission. So close on some categories but I had to pick one Lesbian/Bi Women of the Year: The one most visible Rachel Maddow b/c she was out in the beginning. Wana Sykes came sooooo close though. The same with the Best FictionalWeb Series . I had to choose FEED b/c I like dark sinster media forms. B.J. Flecther was sooo close. Friends& LoversShow came third on my list only b/c of the acting is not superb. I voted by the overall content, writing, acting, directing, character, etc(Hey I'm a writer I went very in-depth about my choice) of the web series not by how hot an actress is (too shallow). I hope F&LS will do a lot better.
holy moly!
That was sooo difficult! I bet I can come up with way better answers later... I'm not good at these kind of things...

on reading the 2005 awards
this comment made me giggle: "they've [Betty] become the Lindsay Lohan of the lesbian community." now Lindsay Lohan has become the Lindsay Lohan of the lesbian community. Who'd have guessed that would happen
"My life's like a romantic comedy that's never romantic! Or comedic! My life is nothing like a romantic comedy!" - Caitlin (Cashmere Mafia)

Karman Kregloe and Bridget McManus
they agreed to anounce their marriage in order to cheer us up after prop 8 passed even though they didn't have to, but we're grateful they did :)
Wanda Sykes.
RE: Wanda Sykes
Pyewacket, that is pretty much why I have chosen Wanda Sykes as well. :)
Question: Who are the women in your profile picture, Pyewacket? Thanks.
Questions about submissions
Can we nominate old books with revised editions published this year? How about 2007 books published in paperback in 2008?
Can we nominate documentaries for festival releases? For example, Laughing Matters ... Next Gen.
Why no vlog category?
Best Graphic Novels
I nominated:
The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel
Awkward and Definition by Ariel Schrag
Old favorites but new publications.
Best Non-Fiction
Look Both Ways: Bisexual Politics by Jennifer Baumgardner
Queer America: A GLBT History of the 20th Century by Vicki L. Eaklor
Performing Queer Female Identity on Screen: A Critical Analyis of Five Recent Films by Jamie Stuart
Twisted Triangle: A Famous Crime Writer, A Lesbian Love Affair, and the FBI Husband's Violent Revenge by Caitlin Rother
The "famous crime writer" is Patricia Cornwell, but it's not really about her.
Jill Bennett and Cathy DeBuono for best couple
Some of my nominations not mentioned yet:
10. Lesbian/Bi Musician or Band of the Year: Sarah Bettens
11. Lesbian/Bi Woman of the Year (American): I nominated Rachel Maddow and Wanda Sykes, but also Cathy DeBuono and Jill Bennett for their recent activism.
Have you seen Cathy DeBuono's speeches at the Prop 8 protest rallies?
http://www.gaywired.com/video/index.cfm?showID=1075352 (Silverlake, CA)
http://www.gaywired.com/video/index.cfm?showID=1077952 (Chicago)
Have you seen Jill Bennett's new vlog?
Jill Bennett debates gay marriage with her conservative neighbor
http://www.gaywired.com/video/index.cfm?showID=1073470 (Part 1)
http://www.gaywired.com/video/index.cfm?showID=1073479 (Part 2)
http://www.gaywired.com/video/index.cfm?showID=1073481 (Part 3)
They may not be as famous, but they're an inspiration to our community. Jill's conversation with her neighbor personally inspired me to discuss Prop 8 with people I thought were a lost cause, and I was surprised to find some of them open to re-thinking their position.
13. Lesbian/Bi Couple of the Year (American: Jill Bennett & Cathy DeBuono
Again, an inspiration to our community. Cathy DeBuono has introduced Jill Bennett as her girlfriend twice on camera (Chicago protest and Toyko film festival), so I assume it's not a secret anymore.
15. Keith Olbermann and Tyra Banks
Wow, I had no idea about
oohh!
i admit it, i picked Lindsay and Sam, too!! (is anyone surprised??)
and best ally: Keith olbermann

And there's nothing wrong
Lesbian/Bi Couple of the Year (Non-American)
How about Shamim Sarif & Hanan Kattan, the creative force & real life couple behind the two new grand lesbian movies out there: I Can't Thing Straight and The World Unseen.
Shamim Sarif: writer (novel & screenplay) and director
Hana Kattan: Producer
Worst...
You should give out awards for the worst perfomances as well. I would love to nominate "A shot at Love" and "Grey's Anatomy"....
Oh and by the way Eden Riegel should totally win best ally! !
