Rosie O'Donnell Returns to NBC with "Rosie's Variety Show"

Openly gay comedian and former talk show host Rosie O'Donnell will host a live, hour-long special on NBC on Nov. 26 called Rosie's Variety Show, it was announced in The Hollywood Reporter today.

The show — a 2009 version of classic variety shows like The Carol Burnett Show or The Ed Sullivan Show — will feature celebrity guests, musical acts, comedy skits and prizes for the audience and TV viewers.

O'Donnell became famous with the success of her long-running NBC talk show The Rosie O'Donnell Show (1996-2002), which ended its run the same year she came out as a lesbian.

But she's more recently known for her controversial 2006-07 hosting stint on ABC's The View (see our article "Seven Reasons Why Rosie Had to Leave The View" for an overview).

O'Donnell and her View co-hosts

She has also recently guested on Nip/Tuck (FX), dabbled in producing Broadway shows, released a book called Celebrity Detox about the downside of fame, and launched her own cruise line for gay families. (O'Donnell and her partner Kelli Carpenter O'Donnell were married in San Francisco in 2004.)

Last year, there were rumors that the politically left O'Donnell was in talks with MSNBC to return to TV with a political commentary show, but the deal fell apart during contract negotiations, according to The New York Times.

If the Nov. 26 Rosie's Variety Show special is successful, NBC may expand it to a full series. The Reporter expands on the reasons behind NBC's interest in this project:

For NBC, the project's live aspect is of particular interest, both as a way of distinguishing the product from competitors and to discourage viewers from time-shifting the show. NBC has aired America's Got Talent results shows live this year and plans a quartet of Saturday Night Live primetime specials.

"This will reinvent the idea of what a variety show is for 2008," NBC vp alternative Craig Plestis said. "There's very few performers willing to put themselves out there live. It makes it more TiVo-proof, and it's something none of the cable networks can do."

The Huffington Post reports that O'Donnell has been considering the idea of doing this kind of live variety show since 2002. It combines O'Donnell's love of theater, unscripted interviews, and commentary, and comedy.

One of the reasons The View's ratings was at its highest when O'Donnell hosted was because of her propensity to speak without a filter, to say something shocking or at least controversial. By airing Rosie's Variety Show live, NBC is no doubt hoping viewers will tune in to see what she'll say next.

Excellent News!!

This is great news-I love Rosie's unscripted comments. She says what she thinks and feels without worrying if people will like it. It is refreshing!!

I have mixed feelings about this...

How do I voice my feelings on this without getting attacked by every lesbian on the planet?

Okay one one side you have me jumping up and down with excitement at the thought of Rosie coming back to television. I lived and breathed for her talk show. She seemed like such a happy person and alive person. Then on the other side you have me covering my head with a blanket because I'm scared. Rosie has changed so much in the last 10 years. Some for the good and some for the worse. I'm sure I will love the show but only if she doesn't go off on power trips.

I'd appreciate it if you'd please leave all knives in drawers before you respond.

I have mixed feelings too

And I think a lot of other lesbians do, as well, which is why there aren't a milion comments on this thread already. I'm glad she's come out and is speaking more honestly and sometimes saying the things that no one else will say (but that need to be said), but I wish she would do it a little more diplomatically sometimes. I guess I wish she didn't come across quite so angry all the time - even if I understand why, it's just not very effective and makes her look like just another angry lesbian. Plus her "ching chong" comment was annoying.

But I do think she's very talented, and I hope the show's a hit. I just hope she doesn't seem so out to get everyone this time.

Yeah, right.

Oh, Amy Jo, the poor over-sensitive dears on here will agree whole heartedly with your misguided opinion. Most of the "lesbians" on here found big bad Ro to be an embarrassment to lesbians the world over. So you can stop ducking. Most of the sell-outs on here will lap it up.

Go Ro. I hope the show is a huge success!

Eldorado...

You seem to have misinterperated what I wrote. I see nothing in my original post that mentioned finding Rosie an embarrassment to the LGBT community. Try asking questions before you jump to conclusion.

"Embarrassment" was used, on

"Embarrassment" was used, on here, during the fiasco on the View. I never said you said embarrassed. I was echoing what was said on here. Get it? In other words, if you have "mixed feelings" or do not like Rosie you'll have plenty of company on here.

Rosie

I'd love to see Rosie AND a good variety show on the air. That's a tough format, but Rosie has a good sense about what's funny, so we'll see what she and the writers are able to come up with.

Great news

Well, I think it's great news.  I really do like Rosie for her honesty.

Maybe this show is what she needs to bring back the old Rosie like some say ?

Congrats Rosie.  I'll certainly be tuning in !

Bravo!

You may not like her, but she has charisma and guts. Hope the show becomes weekly.

It was a shame that someone like her didn't get work for the last two years.

Remember, she's the one who woke Ellen up while on The View.

I love out lesbians. I admire them! Way to go.

I can't wait!

I loved the Carol Burnett show, and can't wait to see if Rosie's variety show is as funny.  I'll be rooting for her.  Yes, she can be a bit brusque, but then again, she can afford to be.  If speaking her mind was a bad thing, she wouldn't have the entertainment industry lining up to offer her something new.  Don't feel sorry for Rosie that she hasn't had a job in the past two years, she could afford to retire if she wanted to.  I'm sure that Rosie works when Rosie's ready to work, and not a minute before.

Oh boy...HERE COMES ROSIE!

Sorry Rosie...a friendlier and less freightening lesbian has come along and taken your place.,....her name is Ellen. I think rosie has been to "in your face" for the straight crowd to adore her as much as they used too...

Hmm...

I don't know how many people is going to watch this, but I might sneak a peek.

Yipee!!

I think that it's great!!  On the other hand, people with their preconceived notion that she's going be like she was on The View,( which by the way I happened to like) may tend not to watch. It's  going to be a variety show, I think that's what people need to remember.
