“Fringe” Benefits: A Conversation with Jasika Nicole
AE: Does race factor into your experience of being out? But the people who ever have anything to say, they generally tend to be people who are part of the black community. It’s such a hard thing to have that be the case. It’s like you’re a minority within a minority within a minority. At times it feels like you’re at the very, very, very bottom of the list. That doesn’t feel good to anybody. I’m still trying to discover what that means and what that’s like and why that is so threatening to people. I don’t know where it comes from.
AE: What kinds of reactions specifically do you face? It’s just part of being who you are and being honest about it and being unashamed. And even with the crappy things that we’ve been through in regards to having people be completely unaccepting, I think that the price of being in love with somebody and knowing that you care about them and they care about you in the same way, and being really happy, honestly, that’s worth the bad parts of it. That’s just how it is. Love is not an easy thing to find, and when you actually find it, everything else becomes kind of secondary.
AE: What is happening now with your illustrations? I remember her saying specifically, ”Is this going to be a story about a biracial girl growing up in Birmingham in the South, or is this going to be about somebody who identifies as queer?” Of course, this being my first foray into the literary world, I was completely taken aback by that, because it’s just my story. It’s just what I’ve experienced and that’s the story that I want to tell and that’s the story I enjoy telling. I’m really comfortable with just processing and creating as it comes out of me and putting it up online just to share it with people who are interested. For right now, I’m not interested in going out and trying to turn it into a book unless it’s exactly what I want it to be. my hero
she sounds so much like me... and I never knew about her??!?!? Im so glad you posted this. She is currently my hero.
I also feel the same way. Im a big creatie outlet who makes good grades just by doing the homework.
I really hope that if I read more about her I can find a path of my own.
Thanks again
Jasika Nicole interview
Thanks for the interview. I will not watch the show, I am not really interested. Also I work, and I only have time for the show "Lincoln Heights" on Tuesday nights during my break. haha.
Anyways, I really enjoyed this interview. It was interesting to read about what she goes through with her girlfriend/significant other, enjoying her creative ideas, and being honest about herself. I will check out her comic on her website, it seem interesting. Thank you, Jasika Nicole.
Thanks again.
NICE
I enjoyed reading the interview. JN is also very easy on the eyes. Best wishes to her and her girlfriend.
Great interview
Thanks for this interview. Jasika seems like a really cool and intelligent person.
It's always great to hear how a fellow queer Black woman processes the interesting intersection between race and sexuality.
Cool Points
Well, that was unexpected
Wow I just read this because I was bored, I've never watched a single episode of Fringe or even heard of Jasika before - but she blew me away. This was a fantastic interview, it's very rare that I feel like I've gained something from reading an interview with a celebrity, but she was truly an inspiration. Thanks once again AE for doing a great job.

Thank you...
Thank you for this wonderful interview that allowed us to get to know this terrific artist, actress, individual... it's always great to discover new talent and even more so when that talent is out and proud, thus giving young people (heck, giving all people) someone to be able to look at for inspiration on how one can live out and proud and be a success.
It's nice that AE has their finger on the pulse of everything that's currently happening that might be of interest to members and visitors to this site, whether introducing us to a breath of fresh air like Jasika or giving us the latest on LGBT friendly entertainment or even straight but not narrow friends of the LGBT community, AE always keeps us up to date, and that includes contributions from our own AE community who make sure to let everyone know about information of interest as well, since it really does take a village!
I'll echo the sentiments of JK Singer in saying "thanks once again AE for doing a great job."

Oh such bravery is she, Jasika to come out of the closet. Def. easy on the eyes.I'm so glad she's getting gigs especially for a WOC who is now an out-lesbian WOC in the Hollywood. I've never seen Fringe but it makes me wanna watch. Do they have it on the net? Or is it only on TV?
It makes me wonder what other household WOC names are on the DL/lo-lo?
Big Ups to Jasika!
Wow
"Because I think it’s really easy for people to have immense talent and then not know what to do with it or where to go from there with it. I feel a lot of times we are own worst enemy in that we hold ourselves back, or we get lazy or we procrastinate and nothing moves forward. And here’s a woman who has done huge things in this business in a relatively short period of time."
Ha! That so describes me. As my friend says I throw up my own obstacles as to why I can't do something. Oh, and I am the queen of procrastination.
never seen fringe
I have never seen fringe, but after reading this article I definetly will have to give it a try.
It was so great to hear from such a talente, poised, intelligent woman. It is even better that she is an out Black woman. It seems like they are so rare in the entertainment industry. I thank her for paving the way for more women of color to just be out and be themselves. Thanks AE for this article.
Black Lesbian Women
I'm so glad Jasika's a lesbian. I love the show Fringe, and I love her character and now I love her even more.
I just hope they won't make her date a man on the show.
Her Co-Star Anna Torv
I've watched Fringe from the beginning and Jasika character is so adorable. But I have to say that I didn't know she was family, I watched the show because of her co-star Anna Torv. There is a UK series called Mistresses which Anna played a lesbian last year. She played opposite shelley conn as a very convincing lesbian. check it out on YouTube.
I will be watching these two more carefully for the rest of the season.
Give it a chance.
This woman NEEDS to be cast
I just might..
..start watching Fringe:)
Never insult anyone by accident.
