News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Interview With Laurel Holloman

AE: You've also played a lot of roles that are not lesbian, obviously, and one of them was that really kick-ass chick on Angel. Do you miss playing those kind of roles?
LH:
Yeah, I loved that role. … At that time I just lived in New York, I was just kind of doing my own thing, and I didn't really understand the cult following of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. But it was really my manager who said, "You need to take a good look at this because I think it's really good, and Joss Whedon writes really well, and the actors really love his stuff." And of course when I took a second look at it I was like, "Yeah, this is amazing."

They said that the prototype for the character was Ripley from Alien. They wanted an older person that had some edge and had a fight, military vibe, and I went in and read for them and I got in my car to go home, and they offered me the part right there, and that was really exciting. I was only supposed to shoot a few [episodes], and I think I shot eight. … It was really a wonderful experience because it was a strong woman that was angry and violent, and it had a lot of stunts in it. At a certain point you have to go, "Oh wow, am I ever going to really play an action hero? Maybe not, but I'll play this!" And it was great.

And he [Joss Whedon] writes great stuff for women. All of his women are really edgy and there are a lot of metaphors in his writing, and there's just a lot of sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek type of stuff. I think it taught me a lot, too, about not taking it all too seriously, and that it's about character and it's about good writing. … That was my first experience with long-term TV, and then I went right into L Word after we finished that season, and I just had so much fun.

I didn't realize how many people watched Angel until right after it came out and [found out] that it had kind of a cult following. The funny thing is Jennifer Beals has watched all of Buffy and all of Angel. She's a huge fan, and that cracks me up. [laughs] She loves it, and I'm really glad I did that part. I'd love to do something like that again.

My fantasy would be to do some version of The Brave One, the TV show version of it. I'm very fascinated by how people behave in moments of grief and loss. … I'm also interested in the ferociousness that motherhood creates and how animalistic we become after we have children, and ultimately what it means to protect them. Those types of things interest me.

AE: Those are deep issues to delve into.
LH:
I know, I should try to go for a comedy but it just doesn't really come my way [laughs].

AE: What are you looking at now?
LH:
Nothing right now. I'm just back slowly starting to audition and meet and see if anything fits, and hoping the show [The L Word] goes again, and we'll see. I don't know. There's a couple things that I'm hoping for, but I don't know.

AE: Is there a question that you always get asked in interviews?
LH:
Yeah. It's amazing because you guys never ask this and Diva and She magazine, they never ask "What's it like to kiss a girl?" But sometimes you'll get a straight publication that's like, "What's it like to kiss a girl?" and I just want to laugh at them. I want to be like: "It's really nice. You should try it."

I don't know what to say to that question because it's just a silly question to me at this point. That question is like a dinosaur. It's dated. You know what I'm saying? That's kind of silly. … Like hey, let's talk about these characters, let's talk about these women, let's talk about these relationships, let's talk about the political climate we're in. What do you feel like when you watch me kiss a woman, I don't know, can you answer it? I know who my character is, and this is part of who she is, this is part of everything that makes her up.

AE: I have another question for you. Who's the first girl you had a crush on?
LH:
The first girl I ever had a crush on when I was younger was Kristy McNichol.

AE: Kristy McNichol. Classic choice.
LH:
Classic, and probably eventually Jodie Foster. But I don't know if that's a crush or just somebody that I admire so much. It could be one of those talent crushes. But I remember just thinking that Kristy McNichol was probably the coolest thing I've ever seen, and Little Darlings?

AE: Yeah, that's what she was in.
LH:
Yeah, I just remember there was so much soulfulness, if you look at that film and her trying so hard to be tough, and underneath being very vulnerable. I'm trying to think — I didn't have any girl crushes in my life when I was younger, real-life ones, and after I shot Two Girls in Love, I got a crush on someone that worked on that movie.

AE: Oh, OK.
LH:
Yeah, so there you go.

AE: Anything more that you'd like to tell me about that?
LH:
Just that, um, that — that crush probably turned into my first experience with a woman, and it was beautiful and amazing, and it never happened again, and I wished it had. But anyway, there you go. [laughs]

AE: That's great.
LH:
But now I'm married, married and monogamous. Very married, very happy.

AE: How old is your daughter now?
LH
: She's 3.

AE: Three, OK.
LH:
Yeah, yeah, and I have an honesty that I probably shouldn't have so much about all of these things, but I learned a lot from Two Girls until now, and one thing I've learned — because I have had people try to tell me what I can say to the press — [is] I just like to be myself. And that's what I want to emulate for my daughter, that it's OK to be honest.

AE: That's wonderful.
LH:
I'm not a person that wants to live in a state of fear. Oh, I know a weird question I'm always asked! What do fans do? Has a fan done anything weird? And, um, no. Because I don't live in this state of paranoia about fans, and I've been really lucky, and everyone's been so gracious and so excited that the show's there.

I mean, even when Tina was behaving badly, I went out to Dinah Shore and I did some autograph signing, and like I kind of booed Tina's behavior, and they did too, but then after that everyone was really nice to me [laughs]. I'm not just saying this, it's really the truth: We have the best fans! We have the best fans.

AE: Is there anything else that you want to tell your fans?
LH:
Thank you. [laughs] And don't give up on Tina. Don't give up on Tina, that's all I have to say. She's trying to find her way back into her true self, and I think she had to take this time to grow as a person, and just grow up a little bit and figure out who she is outside of the dynamic of that relationship. She struggled with who she is in that. She's figuring it out.

AE: That sounds very hopeful.
LH:
Yeah, everyone has to remember that Bette's in a relationship with Jodi. Tina's doing the best she can. She's alone. She's the loner now. So that takes a lot of courage, and I think that's where Tina starts to really mature.

AE: I look forward to seeing it. I really do.
LH:
Yeah, good. I love your website!

AE: Oh, thanks! I'm glad you do.
LH:
Yeah, I just think that you guys do a really good job, and I just think it's great.

Thank You...

That was a great and wonderfully insightful interview with Laurel.  I love that the interview gave us a chance to glimpse into the world of Laurel Holloman the person and not just the actress.

I too had my first crush on Kristy McNichol and am a huge fan of Jodie Foster and her body of work, so I loved that Laurel said that.

I'm glad that things appear to be coming back around to Tina and Bette on The L Word... while I do enjoy Marlee Matlin and think that see is doing a wonderful job as Jodi, I'm still one of those fans of Tibette, so it'll be interesting to see just where this season goes with regards to their relationship.  I'd love to see The L Word come back for another season, if it continues along the way tonights show was... I personally find that it was one of the more enjoyable thus far.  I especially loved the opening sequence... Laurel and the rest of the ladies were great.

I thank Laurel for doing this interview and Malinda for the great questions she asked, and I wish Laurel all the very best in all her current and future endeavors.

GREAT interview.

GREAT interview.

The fighting scene from the end of season 1 is my favorite scene from The L.

I've discussed it with some friends and they are always chocked when I tell this, but it is my favorite scene, for sure. And I always thought it was really hard to shoot, but I've never read any interview or LH and JB talking about this, so it was interesting reading. I was sort of “Yeah, I always knew!”

I don't see it as a rape. Actually, I think a situation like that is only possible when there is real love. That's a really beautiful scene, unique and deep. I wish there were more non-superficial scenes like this one. I’m kinda sick of Shane having sex with every single extra.

And I agree with her when she says “you guys do a really good job”. =]

And, just to ad, am I wrong or quite everyone has or had a crush on Jodie Foster?!

The human mind is like an umbrella: it works better when it opens.

shamWow's picture

wow...

that really sums up my feelings about this scene (and more nicely put than I could ever have)

Before reading other comments about it, I never ever thought about it as rape - it is one of the most beautiful love scenes , because it is so daring and real.

Jodi Foster

I don't have a crush on Jodi Foster. I did like her movies a lot and thought she is a great actress but I don't have a crush on her.

However, I do have a crush on one Ms. Holloman though :)

So great!

This interview reminds me of why Tina was my favorite character when I first saw The L Word.

Oh, Laurel!

We can read between the lines. Loved this interview and the allusions to pontential TiBette action in the future.

Thank you, Laurel!

I've been on the Tina bus since episode 1. This season, it seems like the bus is finally starting to fill up.

Thanks to Ms. Holloman for the straightforwardness and the positive attitude. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this season will not disappoint from the T/B perspective.

yws's picture

Laurel rocks!

I have always love Tina's character and I think Laurel does a great job portraying her ups and downs. I really hope Tibette will be back together either this or next season. Thank you for the lovely interview!

Emsny's picture

This was a great interview.

This was a great interview. I think that Laural Holloman is someone that is so down to earth and just really knows who she is. I really admire her for the risks that she takes. I have always been a tina fan since the first time that I saw her at the sink with the pregnancy test in her hand... and I have liked her ever since. I due have to say that I really hated how small her character became at some points and time, but know I realize that because of those time periods we were able to "see" her grow and try to find herself. I wish Laural the best of luck.

All I have to say to end this is "Who the fuck are Tina's parents"... I mean come on we have met everybody else's parents... time to bring Tina's into the picture... just for a moment... nothing big.. we don't want to take away from Tina and all of her lovelyness.

I'm dying for more.

I love interviews; utterly and completely.  Especially the ones with questions that dig up some thick, full answers that not only answer the question, but give all us desperate [fans] readers those little jewels of information that were always searching for.

This was a fantasy interview, both on LH and AE's part; and I'm hoping I get to see more in the near future!

You don't need to buy a magazine for a great interview..

I really loved this interview, great questions great answers. Laurel seems so nice and is so wellspoken, I loved that she talks about her girl crush/experience!First I didn't like Tina at all, but this season is getting sooo much better. We're gonna get some really hot TiBette scenes that's for sure! Can't wait

Tina!

I shall NOT give up on her. They've needed to write her in better the whole last few seasons. It's ok, they originally had Alice as being a bisexual. I'm not really sure what the writers were thinking half the time, but yay! I'm glad to see a great interview done. It was very informative. :) -Rachel

Excellent interview!

I really enjoyed reading that interview, thank you Malinda and Laurel. I found it interesting to hear how Laurel tried to express what Tina what going through with the very limited exposition and screen time she had in seasons 3 and 4. She seems to have a very positive attitude towards everything, which is nice to see.

I also liked reading that Jennifer Beals is a Buffy/Angel fan, that's brilliant!!

Slym's picture

Awesome

I've always loved loved loved the character of Tina and have stated so on many occasions on this site.  I truly admire Laurel, the roles she takes on, the way she gets into the characters and makes them work.  Laurel, I admire your talent and have even more respect and admiration for you now after this candid interview that you've given to AE.  I must agree with you that AE does an excellent job with this site (another thing that I [as well as so many others] do not neglect to state either.  I appreciate your honesty.  I think you're very brave to take on the roles that you do and wish you continued success in your career and life.  I will always be following your career to see what you get into next.

Great interview, thank you AE and LH for sharing.

You guys rock!

Sportylady's picture

Thanks Malinda and Laurel

Wonderful interview.  I was very pleased to read Laurel open up.  She appears to be very real, honest and self-aware and it feels very genuine.  I also enjoyed that she answered the questions in depth, it was cool to get more than two line answers.

In a way, I was a little surprised to read about the last scene of season one, it seems as though no one really touches on that.   I remember watching it the first time and the only thing I could say was "what the f***!"  I couldn't grasp it.  However, a week prior to season two, I watched the first season again and my reaction was quite different.  I remember the tears rolling down my cheek and I finally grasped the reality of their situation.  Then when Tina is in Alice's apartment and takes the marker to the chart and starts to write Bette's name but finally breaks, I gotta say I thought Laurel was magnificent.  It wasn't just me that had that reaction, my two best friends and their husbands both reacted that way.

I don't think I really gave up on Tina when she was with Henry, I just didn't really take to the direction she was going in.  It wasn't that she was with Henry but I just felt that she was pretty edgy towards everyone at times.  That threw me off quite a bit.  I didn't feel that the "group" was treating her any differently, well a smidge, but Tina had gotten carried away with paranoia I think.  I felt that Tina was stronger than that, especially during season two when she was handling so much on her own.

Oh well, I'm not giving up on Tina, in fact I'm really enjoying her this season.  Although, she has to stop talking about Bette during her dates, kind of a buzz kill.  Thanks for the wonderful interview Malinda and Laurel.

"Normal is not something to aspire to, it's something to get away from."

Tears

Oh memories. But it was CANDACE that she was writing. I don't even think she finished the A. My mind jumps to that scene every opening, when they show the chart on Alice's wall. And it's so sad. I too was shocked when I saw the scene but because it was so real, so intense. So touching, strong. I think I watched the episode of the week two times/day during season 1. Had forgotten how big the whole thing was at that time.

Good read

This interview was perfectly timed for me. Thanks! I am hoping for another season of TLW, I'm mentally trying to prepare myself for the end :). I have recently gotten another friend hooked on the TLW and she's just on the 2nd season right now. I'm waiting for her to get to the scene between Bette and Tina after the ultrasound because it is personally one of my favorites. It was good to read that Laurel things so much of the scene as well.

Thanks again

Laurel's no Hollow Woman!

Malinda, thanks for a wonderful and insightful interview with Laurel.  She gives very honest, heartfelt responses to your questions.  I appreciate Laurel's interpretation of Tina and all the things she has gone through and the obvious growth of the character.

I still have hopes for Tibette always love the interaction betwee the 2 actresses.

Laurel is resplendent. I have loved her work from the moment I first saw Randy Dean.

Thank you so much for the insightful interview, and thank you, Laurel, for being so forthright.

I <3 Laurel!

Thank you Laurel, for what you have brought to this series and to us.

I for one am hoping to see Tibette finally together again this season, if for no other reason than to show that people can be the loves of each others lives, betray and lose each other and still come back together stronger and more appreciative of how intensely they feel for each other. It's painful and traumatic, but it does happen.

The scene where Tina & Henry get together in Bette & Tina's bedroom was so similar to my own experience that I felt emotionally rocked by it, and your acting that whole season was awesome (and I disagree with you - it didn't look to us as though B & T were broken up at that point...).  As painful as those 2 seasons were to witness, I still loved you for the honesty you brought to the screen during that experience.

So, Tibette forever, and we love you for what you have done and do for our community!

Laurel is fantastic

It was great reading about her perspective on Tina because when the character was upsetting me and doing all sorts of silly things I hoped for was that the L Wod would stop wasting Laurel talent taking the character in a crazy direction. I think they've come around very nicely.

This was a lovely iterview - thanks Malinda!

Sweet Laurel!

Laurel views this website. How sweet is that. I'm happy that Laurel was so honesty during this interview. I'm glad she gave explanation of Tina b/c I was totally lost. I wanted to see Tina get out a smothering relationship and become this mordern day mom. If Tina does get back with Bette, Bette needs to change. She's too powerful. What would be cool if Bette ran into a dominatrix and broke Bette's powerhouse world to where she begs Tina to take her back.

What do you feel like when you watch me kiss a woman?

What a great response to that trite question homophobic interviewers love to ask women playing lesbian characters. I really enjoyed this interview because both Holloman and Lo come across as benevolent, mature and articulate.

BEST. INTERVIEW. EVER

Wow that interview blew me away - I forgot where I was for a whole 5 minutes as I felt like Laurel was talking directly to me!  You could tell that she really took the time to think about the questions and answer in such depth and so honestly.

What an awesome lady, thanks Malinda.  Also, thanks to Laurel, there's definitely a reason she has the best fans and I'm sure we'll all stick by Tina!

Love this comment... <3

"It goes back to the likability thing, and I think as far as the career goes, it's the fearlessness that interests me, not the trying to mold yourself to fit into something that makes everybody go, "Oh yeah, she's castable," because then you've lost the thing that makes you unique."

Great Interview

Very nice interview with Laurel, she is an amazing woman and actress.

I have never been a fan of Tina until this season (but I've liked Laurel since Two Girls). Something happened to me with my feelings regarding the Bette and Tina relationship where I now WANT them together. I thought for many seasons that Bette needed to find someone other than Tina but the reality is no one has better chemistry together on the show than Laurel and Jennifer. They make the relationship feel real with the passion, lust, love, and all that comes with it. Bette and Jodi are good but it is obvious that Jennifer and Marlee are best friends off camera. They do not have the same passionate spark that Laurel and Jennifer have on set. For the first time since they have parted I want Tibette!!

Longest Greatest Interview

Wow!  Thanks for the lengthy interview.   I love Tina & Laurel.  I've loved many of the TiBette moments that most fans have...but a Tina scene that sticks out for me is Tina's scene in the trailer on set a season or two ago trying to hook up with the guy & him ruining it.  It was great watching Tina finally set her mind to something, going after it & then watching her reaction unravel when it wasn't happening like she imagined it would.  Loving Tina this season & hoping for a Season 6.  I love that Laurel talks about the history of Bette & Tina & how things mean more when they happen between those two characters because they have been through so much.  I think a lot of fans are relating to Tina right now very much watching her at her job trying to carve out her place & dealing & navigating so many different pressures at work....& also being single. Doing it on her own, but with her past decisions with having Angelica, & Bette in her life, coloring her every day life....
IfOnly's picture

Thank You, both

Yes, a truly wonderful interview. I even think this is so high up on the list that it gets to compete with the interview with Mandana Jones(!). And that says a lot 'cause that (and this) interview made me forget where I was for a while. Kinda neat, huh? Answers that are fully thought through. And honest it seems. Amazing. Too bad it made me even more sobby about the fact that this might be the last season. That this ground-breaking show actually has an end.

I'm really rooting for Tina and Bette this season. I just love the (Tina's) yearning. And the fact that we've gotten to know relationship-Bette through her relationship with Tina makes Bette's relationship with Jodi feel wrong in some way. You know, 'cause Jodi's not Tina. =)

Ahhhhh

How refreshing! Kudos to Holloman for her honesty about her character, the dynamics of the show and her own sexuality. I'm sure she'll make a kick-ass mom.

Also: hahaha burying the lead, indeed.

And - true...what about Tina's parents? I never really noticed but you don't really get a sense of her family.  Perhaps that's what she means about Tina being a loner.

Great!

Great, great interview. Never really been a Tina fan, but Laurel has definately gone up in my estimation. Very strong, confident, intelligent woman.

Now I get it...

Tina, even when she was dreadful in seasons 2&3, seemed to have that glint in her eye ~ that smirk on her face.  Now I know why...cuz that's Laurel Holloman shining through.  She has a natural humor about her, the way she says things.  Dang, as if the woman weren't hot already...my loyalties to Bette are getting challenged!      Great interview ~ love Laurel.
