Interview With Amber Benson

AE: I heard you're going to star in a Dutch movie. Are you excited about shooting in the Netherlands? And have you ever been there before?
AB:
I have been to the Netherlands once before, and I loved it. Right now, we are just waiting for them to finish a rewrite on the script, but I am totally excited about the prospect of going to work in the Netherlands in the future.

AE: Strictly Sexual has had some of its promotional materials filtering through the web at large. Could you talk about the characters and the movie?
AB:
It's a fun sex romp about two couples that are desperately trying to make their relationships work in Los Angeles. I think it's a really funny movie, and I get to play a complete ball-buster, so it was a lot of fun for me as an actor. Plus, the cast and crew were totally fun to work with — a good group.

AE: If you weren't acting, do you think you would still be in entertainment or outside of it?
AB:
I would move to Tahiti and start a reggae band — me on timpani!

AE: What music are you listening to right now?
AB:
I love Belle and Sebastian, Tegan and Sara, Of Montreal. And I have a total obsession with Arvo Pärt's Te Deum. It's beauteous.

AE: As a writer, what is your favorite genre to write for?
AB:
I like supernatural chick lit. It's fun to mix sex and monsters!

AE: How many Ghosts of Albion novels do you have planned with Christopher Golden?
AB:
Right now, we only have the two published novels with no plans for another book in the near future. Chris and I would love to get back into the GOA world, but we're really at the mercy of our publisher. It's up to them how many more we end up doing.

AE: Do you have any other comic book projects in the works like Shadowplay?
AB:
No comics on the horizon, but that doesn't mean I'll never write them again. I'm just waiting for the right opportunity to present itself.

AE: Will you ever publish copies of the plays you have written?
AB:
Not in the near future, but that's definitely a possibility.

AE: What's the most important thing for a young writer in Hollywood: a great pitch, a strong drive or good connections?
AB:
I think all three are extremely important. You have to have the presence of mind to be aware of an opportunity, the balls to take the opportunity that is presented, and the talent to back up the balls when the opportunity bears fruit.

AE: What brought about your desire to be a filmmaker and tell the story that you did in the film Chance?
AB:
I knew lots of girls like Chance that had this mistaken idea that they had to be like men in order to compete in the romantic arena. It was so ironic because they'd go sleep with some random guy or girl, then be totally upset when said random guy or girl wouldn't call them the next day. I just found the dichotomy interesting and really wanted to write a character that was dealing with those issues.

AE: Between Chance and Lovers, Liars and Lunatics, which was your favorite film to wear several hats for?
AB:
I loved making LLL, but you never forget your first. Chance popped my movie cherry, so it will always be number one. During the making of Chance, I have a very distinct memory of walking my dog way early in the morning before we started shooting for the day, and thinking that this was the best time I'd had in my whole life. And it was true.

AE: What's next on your plate?
AB:
I'm working on a novel called Death's Daughter, working on another script that I might try and direct, and waiting for a few independent films I've done to come out.

AE: How do you choose the projects that you do?
AB:
Whatever pays me the most — just kidding. Basically, if I read something and it tickles my fancy then I'm down for it, no matter if I make $100 a day or a million.

AE: Do you plan on attending any more fan conventions in the future?
AB:
I think I'm gonna be in the U.K. in September, so keep your eyes peeled.

Sweet...

Lots of stuff coming up. Awesome!

But my goodness...what is up with Girltrash! being on hiatus? Is it that they haven't shot the episodes yet?

I don't watch the L Word... but holy crap I totally would if Amber was on it. LOL

Lrenda's picture

Wait, what?

You don't watch the L Word?!

GrrrlRomeo's picture

Nah...

I may be a lesbian, but I'm still a geek. I mostly watch sci-fi and fantasy fiction....and cartoons. Soap operas don't really hold my attention.

Omega II's picture

Same Here...

Same here about the Sci-fi /fantasy and cartoons, and I usually don't go for soaps either. The Alice/Dana in S1 and S2, also Jenni and Alice in season 4 are more than worth it. Just cover you eyes and ears during the Sounder scenes in S4.

Squee! Amber Benson = totally awesome. Sadly, I haven't seen her work as much as I'd like to (you can never have enough of Amber). It would be really great if she would appear in The L Word.

Thanks to her, I'm seriously thinking about studying acting.

But yeah, in complete loss of words *faints*

Nice one

You weren't kidding, she really did answer a heap of questions! Cool interview, Amber does seem like a friendly kind of person :)

re: the niceness of Amber

Yup, I can fully attest to the sparkly goodness and all round niceness of Amber Benson!

I was lucky enough to get to interview her* on live breakfast tv in the UK a few years ago and it was fab, as was she :-)

She's VERY down to earth, really friendly, has a wicked sense of humour and swears like a sailor! lol!

I can also attest to the fact that she is a real trooper when it comes to her fans (she'll do conventions and signings etc even if she's on her knees with a cold!) and she's a TOTAL workaholic! I once asked Joss Whedon if he could get her to take it easy and he said "I don't think that's humanly possible!" ;-)

Her mum kicks ass as well and even her little sister is insanely talented!

Great interview Jessica!

*I was dressed as Miss Kitty Fantastico at the time ;-)

Women

If I didn't already love women as I do, this woman would make me love them even more.  She's an awesome blend of strong, sweet, confident, sexy, intelligence and wit.  I can't wait to see what this woman will accomplish in her next 30 years...or the 30 after that.  Amber rocks!

And if she doesn't get a role on L word after pretty much asking point blank...that'd be a terrible shame.  I'd love to see her as the woman who doesn't fall for Shane and thusly breaks her heart.  And please keep her far from Jenny...too much dysfunction there.  My heart couldn't take that.

I was a huge fan of Oz On Buffy...

So it took awhile for Tara to grow on me. I remember  thinking, "Great they've ditched Oz to make Willow a lesbian for 5 minutes for sweeps." Now of course i know it was Seth Green's decision to leave but it wasn't until the 5th season's Family, showcasing Amber for the first time, that I started to like the character. She and Joss did an amazing job of building and fleshing her out and I was truely sad when she was killed at the end of the 6th season. In my mind, she and Willow are still the greatest lesbian couple portrayed on tv today and Amber is now one of my favorite actresses. Come on Hollywood, give her more roles!
GrrrlRomeo's picture

Oz

I cried when Oz left. ::: sniff ::: But when I saw 'Hush' I was like...oh, hey now, who's that? teehee

Oz...and Xander for that matter... are the type of guys I dated in high school before I realized I was gay. So, I get that. But I will never get Kennedy.

VashtheStampede's picture

Hush

Besides The Body (another episode showcasing Amber's abilities) BEST.EPISODE.EVER. And yeah, I never got into Kennedy either. She just didn't click with Willow the way Tara did, but I guess with the way the series ended, they wanted to give someone a healthy relationship.

She is the coolest!

... and she watches the L word too!

I would totally pair her up with Alice.

Amber on the L Word

OMG!!! That would just totally own all!! And ya, pairing her up with Alice would be so awesome!!

In the end though, I'll just be glad to see Amber in anything :D

Amber as Tara pictures

Here's a few screen caps I took. The first one is from the second episode she was in during the 4th season and the last two are from the second to last episode she was in during the 6th season...well technically third to last...but I'd rather not get technical.

 Oh god, Amber Benson, I

Oh god, Amber Benson, I love you so much. Please be my wife. I can cook, and I'm an obsessive cleaner.

And I sincerely hope that you'll be shaking your booty on The L Word any day now. It would quite possibly fulfill my wildest dreams.

Up until the punching, it was a real nice party...

Amy M's picture

Amber v. Tara

I think it's great that she seems to be taking her career in her own hands in so many dimensions (writing, etc).  Although I didn't like the character she played on Buffy. Tara didn't seem to have any "charisma".

GrrrlRomeo's picture

Shy...

Tara was shy and introverted. I've yet to see anyone else portray that type of character as well as Amber did. It was sweet instead of being a stupid joke. As someone who was a lot like Tara...and still am sometimes...I feel grateful. She gave the shy character dignity and inner strength. It made me feel like someone gets it that people who are shy, awkward and maybe insecure on the outside have a lot going on on the inside.

And thanks to Joss too for not making her a joke, you know with other characters laughing at her when it wasn't appropriate. That crap's just painful to watch. Like when I watched "Never Been Kissed" with Drew Barrymore I felt like crawling under a rock, and it was supposed to be a comedy.

Donica's picture

Willow and Tara

A couple for all eternity. I never watched Buffy until I started hearing about the lesbian storyline. I thought it was going to be a fluke for ratings. Little did I know that such a beautiful, soulful couple would be created. I was instantly hooked. I was also fairly devastated when Tara was killed off. It almost turned me off completely to TV. But Amber's explanation and defense of Joss was very satisfying. I also realize in the Buffy universe, relationships are always in danger.

..Witty and Hot

I've followed all of ambers work since buffy cause i loved her so much on that show. I have alot of respect for her, i really hope she gets involved in another cult TV show soon cause she fitted in so good in buffy. It was nice to see her make a cameo in Supernatural (Season 2 ep "Bloodlust").

Might go see her in September. If i can remember and i have the time. I met her a few years ago and it was cool. I was too shy to talk to her though, and i really want to now!

She is truely lovely

A woman from "the biz" that not only eats like a human being, but also uses the word "dichotomy"?

Stole my heart right there.

One Word...

PHENOMENAL!

I had the wonderful pleasure of meeting her and Adam Busch (Warren Mears on BtVS/ boyfriend)and they were both amazing people.

They both took the time to actually get to know the people they were talking to, which is something you don't normally see when it comes to celebrities and their fans. And poor Adam... the scowls he received from her fans, as he played the character who killed her character. And I admit, I was one of those people until I actually had a conversation with him. Two truly amazing people.

Batman's picture

BTVS

was my whole friggin life for almost 7 years! I actually grew up watching it, when Willow and Tara were figuring eachother out and Willow realizing she was gay I was going through the same thing at that same time (I think I was in 8th grade)

 anyways...um, yea... I Love Amber!!!!!!!!
