Joan Jett has been called the original riot grrl, the godmother of punk and the hottest woman in rock and roll. She took time out of her busy schedule to talk to AfterEllen.com about music, cars and Carmen Electra.
AfterEllen.com: You were the first woman in rock and roll to own her own record label, Blackheart Records. How involved are you in finding new bands?
Joan Jett: I'm pretty involved in it, but I don't actually find the band. The people that work for Blackheart have great ears. [But] I certainly hear what it is before we make a move. [New] bands like the Vacancies and the Eyeliners are bands I got turned onto because we played with them.
AE: Blackheart has one band, Girl in a Coma, that's comprised of three young women. Do girl rockers remind you of your Runaways days?
JJ: Yeah, definitely. [Girl in a Coma] are very sweet and seemingly innocent. That reminds me of the Runaways vibe — being really intense rock-and-roll girls but also having this level of innocence, and I mean this only in the best way, this naiveté.
AE: You've come a long way. You recently did a Cadillac ad.
JJ: Well, yeah, we got involved with Cadillac because they wanted people's Cadillac stories. When I started out with the Blackhearts after the Runaways and I moved to New York, my producer and songwriting partner, Kenny Laguna, he had a big old Cadillac. When we printed up the first versions of Bad Reputation, we'd sell them out of the trunk of our car. So [that car] really was our first Blackheart Records office. [Cadillac] really liked that story.
AE: How many Cadillacs do you own?
JJ: Just one.
AE: What color is it?
JJ: It's black on black.
AE: Of course it is.
JJ: Actually, there is a print ad of me leaning up against a car with sunglasses on. That was my car.
AE: I've seen that ad. Your car looked hot, but you looked even hotter. Why do you look so good after all these years?
JJ: Thanks. I've taken care of myself for years. After the Runaways, I never smoked, and I became a vegetarian at least 16 years ago. What I do is very physical. I stay out of the sun, or if I [am] in the sun, I put on a lot of sunscreen. I think those things definitely have a cumulative effect.
AE: Do you have any guilty pleasures?
JJ: Not really.
AE: Do you have any guilty music pleasures? I mean, is there a genre you listen to that's completely unexpected for Joan Jett, like opera or country?
JJ: Not anymore. You know, when I was a kid I used to listen to Broadway. Because I was in drama class, I knew a lot of those show tunes.
AE: Show tunes! What's your favorite musical?
JJ: Cabaret. We did it in school.
AE: I love Cabaret too.
JJ: I met and eventually became friends with Liza Minnelli. We're still friends today.
AE: Your friend Carmen Electra is in your "A.C.D.C." video. In one scene, she's emerging from a subway station. I find it hard to believe that Carmen takes the subway anywhere.
JJ: It was the wonder of film.
AE: There's a rumor you're dating her.
JJ: Well, I can tell you we met on the "A.C.D.C." video, and we became great friends after that. She's a great person. I love Carmen. She's beautiful and a wonderful woman.
AE: Are you just friends or friends with benefits?
JJ: We're good friends.
AE: OK. Are you dating anyone at all?
JJ: No. You know, music is my life. I'm on the road so much, it's not really fair.
AE: Is the road still fun after all these years?
JJ: Definitely.
don't get me wrong, i love
She is awesome
I love Joan Jett
Joan Jett made me love Rock N Roll...
Evasive
Yeah? she definitely didn't
Yeah? she definitely didn't give a straightforward answer about Carmen. But Carmen Electra. Really? I just see Joan Jett with someone different. Someone more like... me?? lol
Yeah, I agree. Carmen
I keep looking at her
Joan is Irish, she is supposed to be pale.
She's still in leather....
She's stated she never stopped wearing leather, but that if she thought it'd make a difference she WOULD stop wearing it. I've been face to face with her and I could smell it. I mean it wasn't bad, just unique. Her, so to speak.
And on the pale note...I feel her pain. I have to use a tanning bed to tan, so I don't...and I dye my hair red which makes me even more white lol. But she's just always been pale, I don't see her tanning to please other ppl.
Good Ole Joan
Yeah, we had a moment...
I met JJ while working at CREEM back in '83. She and the Blackhearts came by the offices to kick some Rick Johnson ass, as they happened to disagree with his assessment of their talents.
She is pale, and pretty petite. But I suppose working nights would make any of us pale.
Anyway, she and I shook hands and chatted for a while, and she made sure I was coming to the show (they were opening for the Police). Too bad I didn't know I was a lesbian yet! The eye contact was memorable.
Joan: I'm single again! Plus: love that you went back to the black shag.
alhambra in '07
I met Joan after a show in Alhambra CA. I could tell they didn't think anyone would find her after the show...teehee but I knew an insider. Well by knew I mean I met her at the show.
We were there waiting for her during encore, and when the van pulled up. A lady got out and proclaimed that she might not want to sign....I mean Joan has a mouth to speak does she not. Sheesh. Anyway I was going to leave it at that but one of the 4 other ppl there shouted to Joan asking her to sign sometihng, she said "Yeah, over here" and we walked with her *shudders* and one girl kept playing the 'my daddy's in the military' crap. My dad used to be a Navy Seabea and my brother was on a sub at that exact moment, but that was the LAST thing I'd want to talk to her about.
Anyway I tried to keep calm and collected *as a musician I'd love to work with her* and she turned to walk off and nearly ran into me it was funny. She signed my cd *I was the only person prepared with anything related to Blackhearts at all* and she did so smiling, and she nearly made me cry after I shared something with her. Very sweet woman, than Joan Jett. :)
Two shows this yr at least on my horizon.
Creem!
Hey Joan!
I don't get this Emperor's new clothes stuff
I was the biggest Runaways fan from 1976, and have been a huge Joan fan all down the years... until about 4, 5 years ago, when I started to realize what a hypocrite she is.
(And I too have met her, and I think I know as much about her career as any long-time fan, having really followed her career and been on all the boards etc for over 20 years)
She sings about not giving a damn about her bad reputation etc and talks about being proud to be a strong woman and proud to be a role model... and yet she STILL refuses to come out, despite the fact that everyone who gives a good goddamn knows. (And the ones that don't, won't care.)
She clings on to her 'mystery' in the hope that it'll do her career good - her and her manager always with an eye on sponsorship, the elusive next hit, etc.
She's always lied, always been evasive (she's lying right there about the dugs and smoking, I can absolutely assure you... and she's cleary had work done, so why not just admit it?), and for so long I understood that (or tried to) but as it's gone on over the years and we've seen more and more women with so much more to loose do the courageous thing and come out, it's stuck in my craw more and more.
It really turns my stomach, these days, to see someone who I once practically worshiped hiding behind this bunch of coy cowardly crap.
Come out already, Joan, and you can be an icon again.
Oh, and I don't believe for a second that she and Carmen aren't doing the do.
More on Joan Jett
I am nor really defending Joan here, but I have to say that I don't think the fact that she has NOT OFFICIALLY come out makes her a hypocrit. She was granting interviews to Girlfriends magazine (RIP) before it was trendy. She appeared in photoshoots with a "Dykes Rule" sticker on her guitar. She didn't change the lyrics to Crimson and Clover. In various ways Joan has "come out" if not explicitly, then merely by being herself.
Maybe she feels a statement is superfluous. Or maybe Kenny Laguna really is the Svengali he is accused of being.
In any case, I am not disappointed by Joan's lack of statement affirming her sexual orientation, per se. I am, however, let down that she did not take part in or show any support for "Edgeplay," former Runaway Victory Tischler-Blue's documentary on the band. And for that I do blame Kenny.
For those of you unaware of Tischler-Blue's work and of the film "Edgeplay" check out http://sacreddogs.com. That is Tischler-Blue's production company.
Why does she have to come
She doesn't have to come out
Relax, no need to be harsh.
If she officially came out, if she were even lesbian to start *!!!* then she'd automatically exclude her straight fans from her music in a way. Her lyrics have been a tell all for a while, that should be enough.
Take from her what you will, but to actually PUT DOWN a woman because she won't come out, just to please you and others like you, is rediculous.
Just calm down and think hard about that. She grew up in a time that it was not condoned in any way, so I'm sure that plays a part too.
It's also none of our business. I might be less intrigued with her if I knew anyway. So chill. Go listen to "Sinners" and relax.
