Aw! 15 Adorable Lesbian Couples

Before it was a show, the L word was love. And lesbians. Lesbians and love. So for this very special holiday that happens every year, we wanted to get in the spirit with some of both. Lesbians in love. Model/actress Jenny Shimizu is as famous for having dated Angelina Jolie as she is for her androgynous fashion appeal, but she doesn’t seem to mind. As to if she’ll ever get married, Jenny told Diva, “You know, that’s a hard one. Either we get the same laws as heterosexual couples, or I don’t want it at all. But I’d like to settle down and get married. I feel like, as gay people, we date each other and being girlfriends has always been enough for me, but I’m not sure. It might be one of those hetero luxuries, and we jump right in on it. With my girlfriends I’ve always felt committed without needing marriage.” The Glee actress married her psychiatrist partner in 2010, telling People, “It’s a great and wonderful thing at the tender age of 49 to have finally found somebody that I want to be with. I’m so lucky … I’m looking forward to spending every day with this woman all the time and we’re making that happen.” Three years later, they’re still happy in love. Last January songwriter/musician Linda Perry was asked if she and Sara would ever get married. Her response? “We gotta get through a year first. It’s been eight months. We’re going on nine.” Now that it’s almost year two, we wonder if things have changed, as the two seem to be even more serious than before. In the 2012 book We Killed, legendary comic Lily Tomlin told the story of how she’d wanted to come out about her relationship with writer Jane Wagner at the height of the career in ’70s, but was told she couldn’t because it would ruin her career. “And then, after that, we had to go outside to the car, which was in front of the theater,” Lily said. “There was a huge audience, and when we got in the car, her fans were rocking the car back and forth. And the idea that somebody’s career could actually be ruined and that their lives could get ruined was astonishing. To go from that to ‘You can’t let out that you’re gay or they’ll hate you’ struck me.” Forty years later, they are out and people still love Lily. When Dani Shay released her new music video for “One,” she was also showing off her new girlfriend in her Glee Project co-star, Ali Stroker. “Like I say in the song, the first five days of knowing her… within the first five days it grew from being immediate connection and friendship, laughing hysterically together to talking deeply and understanding each other in a way that felt like – it literally felt like meeting someone you had known for so long,” Dani told us. Aw.

The newly expecting moms were married in Connecticut in August of 2011 because it wasn’t legal yet in New York, where the two live. “We’re old fashioned in that way — we want to be legally married,” Chely said before the ceremony. The musician and TV writer were best friends for years before they took it to the next level and Melissa couldn’t be happier. “Finally through relationships and through my own growth process and understanding of my life and my own choices, here I am in a situation where I’m in a relationship with someone who I’ve been friends with for 10 years,” she told us in October. “We’ve got a track record of friendship-love to begin with. Then to bring that closer was just really natural and a beautiful thing. It’s the most supportive, healthy relationship I’ve ever been in, so I’m not surprised that my music is reflecting that.” The trainer and her yoga instructor partner have been together for several years but made it public this year when they magically acquired two children. Jillian told Redbook, it was secretive “…only because Heidi wanted to keep her life private. But when we were having kids, I thought, How am I supposed to hide a newborn? So we thought, ‘Let’s talk about it.’ It wasn’t so much about coming out. It was more about, OK, this is my family.” And a beautiful family it is. The comedian/writer has been with her partner Lori, a real estate developer, for more than 15 years. In 2009, she told Time, “We’re kind of die-hard holdouts. We have so many friends who got married right before the election, and it was a really fun time. We went to a zillion parties. But I [could] see the writing on the wall, and I had a feeling that Prop. 8 was going to pass. It was a really crushing blow to our friends to go from this kind of high of exhilaration to this stunning defeat. So Lori and I feel we’re going to wait until there’s one marriage across the board, and it might be awhile. We just feel strongly about it.” Hopefully they’ll be able to make it legal in the near future. Wanda Sykes joked last year that she’s been married to both a man and to a woman, and she prefers the latter. In fact, she strongly prefers her French wife Alex, who she married in 2008 before coming out publicly at a Las Vegas Prop. 8 rally.

Brandi Carlile lent her voice to the push for marriage equality in Washington state in 2012 and was able to make it legal with love Catherine Shepherd the same year. “It feels tremendous to see that in my lifetime,” she said. “If you had told me that when I was a teenager and struggling, I wouldn’t have believed it.” The couple have been married for almost five years and still seem to be incredibly psyched on each other. If you are doubtful, then you clearly didn’t see Ellen’s birthday tribute to Portia earlier this month, where she “recreated her life.” Every other Valentine gift pales in comparison. The bandmates went public about their relationship in 2011 after they were discriminated against on a Southwest flight. They don’t talk much about their romantic relationship, but they did say in their statement, “We were simply being affectionate like any normal couple.” Just any normal hot couple. The WNBA star/Olympian proposed to her girlfriend in 2012 and are set to get married this summer at the Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis. Two must-haves at the ceremony: “Red velvet cake and Chuck Taylors.” The Gossip frontwoman and her partner will get married this June in Kristen’s home state of Hawaii. She told The Advocate, “With Kristen I never worry about it ending, I just feel completely full and whole.”
