“People” magazine’s Most Beautiful list features some familiar faces

It’s not every day you hear me say something like this, so steady yourself: We could all learn a little something from this week’s issue of People magazine. It’s time again for their annual “Most Beautiful” list, and I’m sure you’ve heard by now that this year’s most beautiful woman in the world is Jennifer Lopez. I approve People‘s choice – not just because J. Lo is stunning, but because the noise from Hollywood these days is so often young and white that it’s exciting to see a 41 year old Latina woman gracing the cover. In fact, the entire issue is colorful and diverse and awesomely gay-friendly.

Queen of the Lesbians, Ellen DeGeneres, made the list this year, telling People that she gets 8 1/2 hours of beauty sleep every night: “I’m usually asleep by 11 p.m. and up around 7:30 a.m. It’s a lot!” (Not as much as Mad Man Jon Hamm, though; he gets 12 hours!) And bisexual lady Anna Paquin headlined my favorite section of the Most Beautiful list – Beautiful Minds: “I’ve never felt like if I seemed smart that it would be a bad thing.”

But the fun doesn’t stop there! Jennifer Beals garnered a full-page spread in the “Half Their Age” section. She attributes her gorgeousness to “sleep, water, sex, meditation, having a good diet and not letting stress affect me.” (If I were Jennifer Beals, the only thing that would affect me is the mirror, from which I would never turn away.)

You know who else made the Beautiful Minds list? Lucy Diamond. Er, I mean Jordana Brewster. The Yale grad talks about loving Tina Fey, but she sounds a little more like Hermione Granger: “[In college], I was so obsessed with getting good grades that I was a nerd.” Put on some librarian glasses and tell us more!

Paula Patton, who won our hearts forever with her portrayal of lesbian teacher Ms. Rain in Precious, filled out her own page, too, in the “Year of the Bombshell” portion, showcasing some delicious abs. Patton says, “I realized a long time ago I’m not going to be a size 0. For me, life is about drinking wine and having bread and cheese – just not every day!”

Plenty of other ladies who have played gay made the list: Jessica Capshaw, Julianne Moore, Jada Pinkett Smith, Amanda Seyfried, Mila Kunis and Hayden Panettiere. Angie Harmon even took off her makeup for the Not a Drop of Makeup Section.

Hmm, what’s that? Detective Jane Rizzoli isn’t a lesbian? Ha ha ha! Oh, that’s a good one!

Lots of my favorite women of color are featured this year.

Mindy Kaling posed with Office co-star Ellie Kemper for Beautiful Minds. (Dartmouth and Princeton grads, respectively.)

Sofia Vergara knows how scrumptious she is: “I was a lot: big boobs, tan, big mouth, the accent, the blonde hair. My dark hair toned me down. My eyelashes are still super blonde, so I can’t live without mascara.” (Yeah, that dark hair really toned down your sexiness, Vergara.)

There are plenty of young stars in the Most Beautiful issue. You’ve got your standard Emma Watson, Emma Stone and Blake Lively. And Pretty Little Liars fans, I gotta say, Lucy Hale is even more gorgeous with no makeup.

I’m going to use this year’s Most Beautiful to parse my AfterEllen.com Hot 100 top 10. Right now there are about 150 women on my own personal list; I’ve got to start narrowing it down!
