Passing the Torch

In April 2002, I had the crazy idea to start a lesbian entertainment website. To my surprise, it turned into a full-time job, and then snowballed into the wonderful, messy, often inspiring, sometimes exasperating community of readers, writers, bloggers, and vloggers that it is today.

But after seven and half years and 1,000+ articles and blog posts, I’m just plain burned out. It’s time for me to turn in my Professional Lesbian credentials, and let someone else run the site ? for your benefit, and for mine.

So I’m happy to announce that as of Nov. 1, Karman Kregloe will be the new Editor in Chief of AfterEllen.com. Karman has been working with me for years, since before the sites were acquired by Logo, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to hand the reigns over to her.

I’m confident that Karman and Trish Bendix will continue to do an excellent job managing the site, with the help of our talented bloggers, vloggers, and our moderator Harpy.

There won’t be any major changes on the site in the near future, and I’ll still be around. In addition to being an ongoing resource for Karman and Trish, I’ll continue to write my Visibility Matters column (which I will finally have the time to write now!), I may still blog occasionally, and I’ll be adding my thoughts in the comments along with the rest of you.

I want to thank everyone who supported the site ? and me personally ? over the years, including Logo for giving us the resources and funding to keep going, and Scribegrrrl, Malinda Lo, and AfterElton.com‘s Editor in Chief Michael Jensen for all their help with AfterEllen.com over the years.

I’ve learned a lot along the way, and made some mistakes, but I don’t have any regrets except one: I used to be able to reply to all of the emails, private messages, and Facebook messages I received from readers ? requests for advice, moving coming out stories, thank-you notes ? but I haven’t been able to for the last two years or so. As the site grew from half a million to close to a million readers, I just started getting too many messages to reply to them all ? but I have read every single one of them, and cherish many.

I’ll be taking the next few weeks to catch up on years of missed sleep, work on a few projects, spend time with Lori, and weigh a few different options for what to do next.

You can keep up with me at SarahWarn.com and on twitter at twitter.com/sarahwarn.

I look forward to seeing how AfterEllen.com evolves in the future!

Sunday night update: Wow, I’m overwhelmed by all the wonderful comments! I’ll try to respond to some individually in the next day or so, but in the meantime, just…thank you. Your stories about what the site has meant to you means a lot to me.
