Oprah wants everyone to see “Precious,” so will you?

When Oprah tells us to read a book, we run to bookstore. So now when Oprah tells us to watch a movie, will we all now run to the multiplex? The media mogul appears in a new trailer for the film <ahref=” /blog/jamiemurnane/push-based-on-the-novel-by-sapphire-sweeps-sundance”>Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire. The movie, based on the novel Push by bisexual writer Sapphire, has racked up awards and critical acclaim already. But with a newcomer as its star and a its big-name cast in somewhat unglamourous roles, Oprah and fellow executive producer Tyler Perry are putting their considerable muscle behind the marketing push.

Of course after watching the new teaser trailer as well as the original, full-length trailer released earlier, no arm twisting is required to get me in the multiplex. The film looks riveting and devastating. Directed by the openly gay Lee Daniels, the film follows 16-year-old illiterate teenager Precious Jones (played by Gabourey Sidibe), who is pregnant with her second child and lives with her abusive mother (played by comedian Mo’Nique going way against type). The film also stars Paula Patton as Precious’ lesbian teacher Ms. Rain, Mariah Carey as her social worker Mrs. Weiss, The View‘s Sherri Shepherd as receptionist Cornrow and Lenny Kravitz as a friendly nurse John. Mary J. Blige even sings the film’s theme song, “Destiny.” That’s an impressive cast, for sure. And, for sure, much will be made of the de-glamming of its stars, especially Mariah who appears largely make-up free as the no nonsense Mrs. Weiss. This is no Glitter, clearly. But I don’t particularly care what everyone looks like, as long as they can act and the story is told well. Plus, if the glowing reviews are any indication, we’ll get to see everyone gussied up soon enough come award season. So, what do you think? Did Oprah and Tyler convince you to see Precious? Or were you already mentally waiting in line, like me?
