I saw the pilot recently. It was a rough cut, so maybe I shouldn't be so harsh, but it was really, really bad. It felt more like a bad, female version of Starsky & Hutch with non-funny lesbian jokes than anything else. On the other hand, it had two ultra-femme lesbians in tight clothes, so some of the clichés were on their side as far as the dimwitted vox populi are concerned. But I'm still not suprised it didn't get picked up.
Hey, It's alreadysome years ago. but they never got the show running didn't they? because I watched recently the pilot. And I loved it. Especialy with christina cox. But now she's playing in a new series. Blood Ties. There she isn't a lesbian detectieve but beautiful as well :D
I'm surprised there haven't been any responses to this.
I'm really excited about the prospect of this show... I suppose I'm also very wary to hope that it will be selected. I think the show is needed socially, but I don't know if UPN's going to take the risk. I guess they've been one of the best networks in terms of lesbian visibility (see last 2 seasons of Buffy), but this is a huge leap, even for them.
It's hard to hope when the possibility of being shot down is so damn probable.
Saw majority of the pilot episode and I have to say, I was a bit disappointed if you compare it to the straight mainstream cop shows out there. The casting was okay, but it seems that the writing and the execution lacked that "something" to make it work. Plus, I'm afraid the lesbian couple had virtually no chemistry on screen. And I know Christina Cox can ignite the screen if paired with the right woman, I've seen Better than Chocolate after all ;)
I mean, once the viewer gets over the "shock" value of the lesbian relationship, there needs to be something else that gets them hooked on the show.
Usually I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to pilots, because it is, after all, the one episode they try to cram absolutely everything in there to setup the show and characters and to try and lure in the audience, but I'm afraid they kind of failed with that.
Every bit of the pilot had something that was kind of ... [i:3d7be86327]off [/i:3d7be86327]for me. Don't get me wrong, I applaud that they even got this far and were able to cast some TV veterans to the roles, but it just didn't work.
Instead of using all the latest hit songs ranging from Norah Jones to Usher, I wish they would have used them more subtly and coupled it with a groovy score rather than constantly jumping from one chart hit to another and sometimes doing so not that seamlessly.
The acting was as good as the writing allowed it to be and it just didn't cut it. Ranging from really bad side character acting to the actual main characters doing a sub-par performance. The show's premise and characters had all the potential of being great but it just fell short in all aspects.
But god knows, the stuff we're getting on the L Word, I wish this WOULD have made it, if only for the fact that I could watch some regular lesbian relationships WITHOUT haveing to watch yet another season of frigging creepy carnivals and the plummeging-to-it's-death Alice/Dana relationship of doom.
Cause, really, Christina Cox in silky pajama bottoms and running around being a totally hot cop would have been SO much better [i:3d7be86327][b:3d7be86327]entertainment [/b:3d7be86327][/i:3d7be86327]than what L Word is right now.
As you've probably read by now, Nikki & Nora was not picked up by UPN for the fall schedule, which means it won't be on the air next season unless it gets a mid-season pickup (which is unlikely).
Interestingly, a New Orleans newspaper mentioned in a recent article that the pilot was rewritten after the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction to "became less about sexual orientation than about two young professional women with interesting jobs living in an interesting city." Hmm...
4/25) WOW... it's a HUGE AMC boom for pilot season!!! Starting with Liz Vassey (ex-Emily Ann) who stars as half of the team "Nikki & Nora" about two lesbian private detectives in New Orleans. The half hour show from UPN is slated to begin airing in September.
Thanks for starting a thread about this, catoblepas! For those who aren't aware, this a lesbian detective series; I just posted a new article on it if you want more background info, but the overall takeaway is that this would be the first lesbian drama on network TV if the series gets chosen by UPN for its fall lineup.
News update: the pilot starts shooting on March 24th in New Orleans. Interesting article about it today in a New Orleans newspaper with a quote from Ilene Chaiken:
quote:Ilene Chaiken, executive producer of Showtime Networks Inc. 's series "The L Word," a lesbian-themed drama, said that the lesbian aspect of the "Nikki and Nora" pilot could improve the show's viability by providing a new take on the crime genre.
"If the thing that makes this story seem fresh is the fact that they are lesbians, . . . that will stand it in good stead," she said from Los Angeles.
Also, Shemar Moore has been cast as a detective in the series (he was formerly a detective in the canceled WB series Birds of Prey)
Just posted a great new interview with Nikki & Nora's creator in which she explains more about the series, how it was developed and cast, and what the chances are for a mid-season pickup.
She also disputes the rumors that the pilot was toned down after the Janet Jackson incident...
I wish that were true, but I scoured all the major news sources, and there's no mention of this, so it looks like the Pine Valley Bulliten person just doesn't realize that a pilot order is not the same thing as a series order.
Every spring the networks announce their new fall lineups on a set date (generally referred to as the "upfronts.") UPN's upfront is on May 20th this year, and that's when they're planning to announce their fall lineup, including whether Nikki & Nora made the cut. Although technically it's possible we could hear about the fate of the show before then, it's very unlikely.

I hope it does get picked up. It would inspire me to actually watch UPN instead of idly zoning out during Enterprise.

Any news on this show? ´Cos I just saw the pilot and damn... I forgot all about The L Word

What does Timberlake ripping off Jackson's shirt have to do with sexual orientation? Oy...
