Maine and Massachusetts

I need some help from people who either live in one of these states or has visited one of them. In your opinion what are the most gay/lesbian friendly areas you know of?

I used to live in the 5-college area of Mass.,which includes Amherst,Hadley and of course Northampton.I would consider those towns to be VERY LGBT friendly.I would also suggest the Boston area as well as Provincetown on the Cape.Good luck and I hope you have fun!                                                ~ It's All Fun and Games 'Til Somebody Gets Burned at the Stake! ~

It'll be fun....in a hard

It'll be fun....in a hard work kind of way. My dream has always been to restore a historical house/building and open it as a B&B. I've always assumed it would end up being in one of these states, and it's getting to the point where I need to start buckling down and head into what I want to do with my life, so I'm trying to get my shit together and some initial groundwork out of the way. Your suggestions were very helpful. Thanks! Anybody else have anymore??

Maine v. Mass

I’ve always thought I’d move to New England eventually, maybe when I retire.   I’ve visited both Maine and Mass, but have never lived there.

AlexD’s right about MA being pretty gay friendly, esp the towns she mentioned.  Amherst and Northampton are notoriously queer.  And P-town is legendary.

Maine, on the other hand, is a strange kinda state.  I don’t know how gay friendly the people are, but they did pass a Domestic Partnership law a couple of years ago.  They’re probably fairly tolerant in the south and along the coast – the Portland area, Kennebunkport, Boothbay, Bar Harbor, Arcadia, etc.

As a Pisces, I love anyplace on the water, and Maine is absolutely beautiful.  The fishing industry is still pretty strong along the coast, Maine’s historical sights and villages are fantastic, and they have some of the best seafood I’ve ever eaten.  Also, shopping – I don’t know about MA but Maine has great shopping – major discount outlets.

the key words

here would be “little tidbits.”

I’ve been to Maine twice on business and twice on vacation – Mass 3 or 4 times for vacation.  So, not exactly an expert, but I do love both states!

i Love Maine

I have only visited Maine before but it is amazing!  I always go to South Portland and it is fairly gay friendly but if you are REALLY looking for a gay friendly place in Maine go to Ogunquit.  It is beautiful and has a very high gay population! Hope that helps!

Just curious as to what

Just curious as to what you know about New Hampshire.  My partner & I visit Maine often, but we would never live there. Portland & the surrounding coastal area are beautiful & fairly enlightened, but the population there isn't large enough to overcome the political situation in the rest of the state.  While NH has a reputation as a conservative state, the state actually leans libertarian - which makes it a great place for gay people to live, raise a family or run a business.  Many people are surprised to learn that Maine is in the Dark Ages compared to NH when it comes to civil rights for gay people.  And if you're planning to start a business, you would be well-advised to thoroughly investigate what Maine and Massachusetts will do to you, tax-wise.  NH has neither a sales nor an income tax, and the business taxes are among the lowest in the country.  Food for thought.....

That was awesome advice

That was awesome advice Beaner. I'd just always assumed Maine or Mass, but I'm definitely not opposed to other options and you gave me perfect reasons to look into NH. Thanks for the info.

I live in Maine

I have lived in Maine my whole life, and I have yet to live in a Gay friendly area. Definitely not the Lewiston/Auburn area, or the northern parts. Ogunquit is definitely the "Gay Area" of Maine, and Portland is a little bit more liberal about gay rights....Otherwise than that, I haven't really seen anything else too Gay-friendly... I wish there was. I don't know about New Hampshire though, I've only been there a couple of times, but it was in the bigger cities.
