News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Red Doors

I could not find another discussion of this film, though Melinda Lo did review it, and that article can be found in the archives. I thought the film was cute, and do not see why we have not heard more about it. Has anyone else caught it as of yet?

The father's failed (and funny) suicide attempts remind me of Sissy Spacek's in Beth Henley's Crimes of the Heart. Spacek's were funnier, but even so.

Thought it was cute too

I thought this film was cute and funny (father's failed suicide attempts).  I also thought the going-ons with the youngest sister and her future boyfriend was great too.  I loved Red Doors portayal of the lesbian sister as well.  I think that it wasn't released in too many areas so you had to wait for it to come out on DVD like I did to see it.  It was well worth the wait as far as I am concerned!

this movie is awesome i

this movie is awesome i watched it twice already. i actually just saw it again at school yesterday and got to meet mia in person. she was great and much prettier in person. this movie doesn't just talk about the lesbian couple but also about the chinese culture, the relationship between the 3 sisters, and changes people go through. that's why i liked it so much. though the suicide attempts by the dad and the love/kill relationship the youngest daughter had was awesome too.

The youngest daughter

I did like the relationship between the youngest girl and her boyfriend as well. There is a dearth of films out there portraying Chinese-American culture. (And even fewer not based upon novels by Amy Tan, whom I love). I tend to gravitate towards those stories as well.

Saving Face was so much better

It's impossible not to make the comparison. I adore Jacqueline Kim and thought her character's storyline was the most well developed in the film, but it was still a waste of her talents. Oh, and she's supposed to be 29? Um, okay, sure, so am I.

Red Doors

Just watched it; cute movie. The Gouda scene was very funny :) as was the scene with father taking a bath and the youngest coming in to hand him the phone:

"Katie, there's a penis in your coat"

"It's not mine"

*LOL*

Can't really get into it ...

I think there are too many story lines and none of them get enough screen time to be fully developed.  Relatively speaking, I do like the Jacqueline Kim (eldest sister) story best.  It came out about the same time as Saving Face, which I like a lot more than this.

yo!

I finally rented the movie...it turned out to be pretty good. I wish the characters were developed more. My favorite parts were with the youngest siste/her ex-bf dynamic...too funny...the father being distant and suicidal was a bit sad and morbid for me though, but I give the movie 3 1/2 stars!
