Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Three cheers for scribegrrrl!!!!!
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
No pressure, SG, just keep doing what you do so well.
And count me in among your fans. Gee, I still go back to the Season 1 recaps and it's just as fresh and funny and insightful and entertaining as it was the first time. Can't get enough of those Jenny barbs (just thinking about the shark fin comment cracks me up! And "Jenny jerky" - har, har!).
I can hardly wait. Thank you!
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Sribes, that might be the funniest one yet...Oh My God! That was hysterical! :D
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Scribe Grrrl, thanks so much for the recaps. You do a fantastic job and I look forward to reading them every week. I laugh right out loud too often to count. Your wit is razor sharp!
Keep up the great work!
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Woo - my first post! Anyway, I'd love to read ScribeGrrl's recap but Episode 206 isn't showing up for me after I click the link on the main page. Anyone else having this problem?? 8O
Great recaps, though! I faithfully wait for them every week; they're my only source of L-Word episode-age due to living in the UK
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
I cannot believe I'm writing this. I have one small complaint my ScribeBabe's recaps. Don't flame me!
It's not about the writing, it's about the formating. I don't like the recaps broken up into so many pages. It interrupts my reading flow to have to wait for another page to load because I'm so anxious to devour her...............
...........recaps.
*ahem*
Although, I do like seeing more of the screen shots.
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
I've heard pretty evenly divided comments about the multiple pages... as many "for" as "against"... so I guess I say whatever Sarah wants to do is fine with me. 'Cause those extra screen caps are pretty great.
Hey EstherB, you'll have to tell me if you take offense at what I said about the U.K. in this week's recap. I was trying to be funny, of course -- I'm actually very fond of the U.K. -- but I've already heard from some Brits who are not amused.
(Helena told me to "never apologize, never explain," but perhaps I will anyway, in next week's recap!)
P.S. What's the deal with people not being able to find or see the recaps, anyway? I get questions about that every week.
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Hey Scribegrrl,
Are you referring to your description of the British accent; that part of the recap? If so, no offense taken, mate! I have come across some Brits that talk in such an offending, presumptuous manner who are in dire need of a dentist! Although I am a born and bred Brit, life is too short to take such things so seriously.... To be honest, I laughed along with you; does that make me such a bad person?
Ah well - don't care if it does  Keep up the great work, while I get ready to devour your recap next week :D
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Scribegrrl -
Do you write / publish anywhere else? You are seriously witty, and I'd love to read more of your stuff.
Thanks.
Fashion Plates and Body Movements
Love the comments on fashion disasters--just because they can, doesn't mean they should--except for Bette. The "coke machine with arms" got me going :yourock: Having been out of town, I watched 3 in a row last night and had to mute the theme songs to get through, too!
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Thanks, EstherB -- yeah, I've had some complaints about the "classist" and the "dentist-deficient" bits. But I've traveled and studied in the U.K., and I even went to the dentist there once, so I feel like maybe it's okay for me to comment.
anderson, I've written a couple of quizzes for On Our Backs and Girlfriends. 8) And you can find some of my fan fic floating around the web, but it's not witty or funny or even very good.
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
 Also having problem getting the recap for this weeks ep. Link is there on main page but doesn't show up when get to recaps page :tears: Am missing my weekly laugh.....

Everyone who cannot see the link to the new recaps each week needs to check their browser settings and make sure the browser refreshes every time you visit a page. This is very important!
For example, on Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu, then Internet Options, and then select Settings in the middle of that popup window. Make sure "Every visit to the page" is selected. Otherwise, your browser is not refreshing the page every time you visit it. You may have old page content stored on your computer and it's not loading the new things every time you visit the page.
HTH
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Yep mine automatically updates the pages so it can't be that..... this weeks one is the only time I haven't been able to see it.
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
wow, scribegrrrl, kudos for being so observant, I didn't even notice that they were playing a different version of the theme song in the beginning, or when Carmen and Jenny had their kiss. I'll have to rewind and rewatch...again:D
And I'm so glad that I wasn't the only one who found Benjamin and Kit repulsive...yuck!
And did anyone else notice that Sandra Bernhart was totally doing crunches wrong when she was on the ball? You're supposed to be working your abs, not your neck!
Great job, scribegrrl! :D
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
oops, double post
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Sandra never does anything wrong! (I do adore her, though.)
Meanwhile, I am being bombarded with e-mails from angry readers in the U.K. who do not appreciate my "dentist-deficient" comment. Help me!!
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Scribegrrrl: 'Never explain, never apologize.'
Your recaps are BRILLIANT.
Stereotypes are just that: stereotypes. But they CAN be funny, if said with the right heart and not meant maliciously. You could come up with comedic stereotypical descriptions of practically every country in the world.
In any case, I don't want to write a long post, just to say--the world is what it is, and if we can't laugh at ourselves, what will we do?
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Thanks, shadowboxer. :D Couldn't have said it better myself (and probably would have offended some people along the way).
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Right, Can't please all the people all the time...but "its (still) worth it" to read your stuff
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Scribegrrrl:
Being a writer means that you automatically open yourself up to comments and criticisms (and praise and adoration). Take it for what it is and move on, and keep on writing.
Personally, I find you flippin' funny.

[b:91e59fbaf7]YOU have a real talent... comedy writing... I encourage you to look into ways to develop your natural skills. Like write a funny book about lesbian community, or bad movies, or just a collection of misc essays on things....

Yes it is....BEHIND me and msgulp. :nono: I have been quietly waiting for Ms. scribe to pick up where she left off last season. It's been waaaay too long grrrl.
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Thanks all -- sorry, I didn't mean to whine. I get plenty o' negative mail, so I should be used to it. I suppose I've just always thought the Brits had better senses of humor! How ironic.
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Yay first post! Hey Scribegrrl, I'm a Brit and found it all really funny! Not too sure we're dentist deficient and think that the recaps are completely witty and smart so who cares! Don't apologise, we're not all uptight!
Keep em coming as I have to agonize a wait till the summer before the lovely Bette is back on my screen. *Sigh*
:D
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
ScribeBabe, we love you and your "dental-deficient" comment made me laugh out loud. Please don't let the criticisms of a few temper your writing. Your razor-sharp wit is what we all love.
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Reading your recaps should be part of any work out regime! I laugh so hard there is no way my abs can't be tightening as a result! :P
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
ScribeGirl- I'm a Brit AND a dentist.....and still :lmao: regarding your writing. No harm no foul!
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
gwynna, that's amazing -- a British dentist! I feel lots better now. :D (<-- big toothy smile)
MsBee sent me a link to a bizarre article: http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005142569,00.html... I was going to put it in the next recap, but I don't think I want to fan the flames any further.
Now somebody change the subject!

I have been drinking Coca-Cola all my life and I'm horribly offended you would liken a self-help huckster to the most glorious of all things, a Coke machine.
I cannot believe you would be so insensitive about such a wonderful American institution.
Hmph.
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
A funny article though scribegrrrl...well worth the read. Brits are tough too by the looks of it...

I don't mean to sound incredibly dour and humourless, but I'm from the UK and I was sorta offended by the Brit comments in the last recap. It's cool if you just meant them as a joke... but I think you have to realise that *tone* doesn't always come through via text, and as they stood they did sound sort of "Americans bashing the Brits again". Much as I love AfterEllen, it is a fairly American-centric website.... and I think Brits reading those comments and not realising that you meant them as a joke might start to just feel left out.
Besides.... if you wanna mock the UK, then OK.... but can you please find something new other than the whole "all Brits have bad teeth, all Brits are classist" thing? It just gets so frigging OLD! How would you like it if you went to a website run by Brits, and mostly frequented by Brits, and there were lots of jokes about Americans being stupid and obese and obsessed with hamburgers? Wouldn't you think "oh for crying out loud - get a new line at least!"
OK - rant over. I enjoy the recaps otherwise (and am very grateful for them, since they're my only source of L Word news!)

I do go to those kinds of web sites and I do read that stuff, but I've never felt moved to complain about them. I think it's funny, actually. Yes, I'm probably one of the worst ethno-centric Americans, but I can laugh at others' ideas that I think are way off base.
Regardless, everyone is missing the point. The recaps are intended to be snarky. About whomever, whatever. You can't have read all her recaps without realizing that. I have to wonder if the people who take offense do so because the truth hurts.
Yes, this is a fairly American-centric web site. I can't speak for the site owner, but I'd assume that [i:7c2cb8fd81]at least [/i:7c2cb8fd81]95 percent of all the movies and television shows discussed here ARE American. And, in spite of the rest of the world hating us, thinking we are the lazy, fat, stupid bullies of the world, Americans are THE BEST in the world at laughing at themselves.
If you need evidence of that, just look at who we have as a president!
Everyone needs to just take a deep breath, sit back and appreciate the recaps for what they are. AND if you don't like them, don't read them.
Grow up people. Get over your cheap selves, and fer fuck's sake, get a sense of humor!
---------------------------------------------------------
For reference - snarky = snide remark.
From urbandictionary.com comes this definition:
[b:7c2cb8fd81]1. snarky [/b:7c2cb8fd81]
(adjective) describes a witty mannerism, personality, or behavior that is a combination of sarcasm and cynicism. Usually accepted as a complimentary term. Snark is sometimes mistaken for a snotty or arrogant attitude.
[i:7c2cb8fd81]Her snarky remarks had half the room on the floor laughing and the other half ready to walk out.[/i:7c2cb8fd81]

New Zealand is being so slack, they still haven't even shown the firt season yet. I've been left with transcripts and +KaZaA *sigh*.
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
Well, I almost don't know what to say. But the simple truth is that I thought Helena was taking a cheap shot by calling rock and roll (which, rightly or wrongly, is considered "American") a "cacophony." She was being a snob. So I took a cheap shot right back, partly in an effort to point out how stereotypical her snobbery was -- by being stereotypical myself. Not one bit of it was serious. I was trying to stoop to her level. Perhaps I succeeded.
Of course I know that those are stereotypes. Of course. I know the difference between stereotypes and reality, and can only hope that my readers do too. (For one thing, stereotypes are often funny, and reality -- as we can all see from this forum -- often is not.)
Also, if I were British, I'd be a lot more annoyed that the L Word writers and directors (and whoever else) have been portraying Brits as manipulative, elitist, and amoral (here I refer to Helena and to Jenny's mentor, played by Julian Sands). That kind of stereotyping will outlast whatever I may say in my little recaps. Tell the show to stop feeding the stereotypes that already exist!
For what it's worth, I've always thought the Brits were incredibly good at laughing at themselves. And I still think so. Please, let's all move on.

Awwww, shucks, Nichole. Thanks.
*digging toe in dirt and looking embarrassed*
It means a lot coming from you 'cause I think you're pretty wonderful. Only slightly less wonderful than ScribeBabe and Jennifer Beals.
I swear I'm coming to Dunedin this spring. I haven't made it yet, but I'll keep you posted.

[quote:4b2b4ad835="MsBeeCharmer"]I have to wonder if the people who take offense do so because the truth hurts.[/quote:4b2b4ad835]
Right. So if lesbians take offense at someone stereotyping them as, for example, promiscuous serial killers, then they're doing so because the truth hurts?
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought that part of the whole point of this website was to try and get away from lazy, tired, boring, stereotypical thinking, and to encourage representations of people that are creative and diverse. Or does this only apply so long as we're talking about sexuality? Racial/national/other kinds of stereotyping are fine?
I think you're the one who needs to get over herself.
[b:4b2b4ad835]scribegrrl[/b:4b2b4ad835] - I take your point about the national stereotyping coming from the L Word initially.... but, as I pointed out in my last post, since I don't actually see the show myself, I wasn't really aware that they were doing this until you just told me about it. I don't mean this as a criticism (honestly!), but I think you may be assuming a little more knowledge about the show from some of your readers than they actually have. Some of us are completely dependent on your recaps.... so we only know what you tell us. Since you'd never mentioned in the past that you felt they were stereotyping the British characters, I didn't know this.
Like I did point out in my last post, I really wasn't trying to get at you. I'm very, very grateful for you taking the trouble to write the recaps. And if you meant the Brit thing as a joke, then I accept it was a joke. All I was trying to say in my last post was that it wasn't completely obvious (to me) from the context that it *was* a joke.
And, to some of the other people who have posted: if some of us just don't think that national stereotype jokes are funny, I don't see why you have to jump down our throats. Sense of humour is a personal thing. Just because my sense of humour isn't the same as yours, it doesn't mean I don't have one. It's not so much that I find those particular jokes offensive as that I find them unimaginative and BORING. If you find them funny, then hooray for you. If I don't, then I don't. Deal with it.
Season 2 scribegrrrl Recaps
If you all haven't noticed every country, every state, province, county or whatever has their own sterotypes and they are usually born from some tid bit of truth that has blown into far fetched humour. Not that that makes it right. Trust me I hate when outsiders try and tell a "newfie" joke. Not near as funny as when I do it. :D there is some truth to that as well. It is funnier when a local makes fun of themselves but seems nasty when others try.
My solution, if you can honsetly say that you have not laughed at or taken some pleasure in another's perceived sterotype then don't complain when it's done to you. If you have never, then continue to fight for what you think is right.
Ms Bee.....No one here thinks you're all lazy. :D AND!!! Stay away from Nichole.

AlexBabe, don't worry. I'm not going there just to see Nichole. I have a friend and some business there. But, would it be okay if I just met Nichole over lunch?
And does this mean we can get back to the hot oil smackdowns over women now? This forum was much more fun when we were doing that!
Come to think of it, it's been a long time since ScribeBabe posted a questionnaire for us to respond to. Perhaps she could put something together so we can respond and get to know each other a little better.
