People who complain...

I remember a time not too long ago when i would have given anything for a hit lesbian tv show or even some lesbian characters on a not lesbian hit tv show. Now it seems they are popping up everywhere, and the only thing people can do is complain. "Why can't they protray real lesbian life.""There's too much straight in there.""It's not fair it was only a phase." Well houldn't we all remember that tv is NOT our real lives. It is there to sensationali*e and intrigue, and well to make money via good ratings. When looking at something like the L Word of course its going to be cheesy full of holes and just piss you off generally, but hey you still watch it don't you. I promise there is someone out there who relates to Jenny's pariah-ism, and doesn't find her annoying in the least. In fact she may even be someones favourite character, gasp! So perhaps instead of ripping apart the things that we so obviously love (for why does every lesbian unplug the phone and clear a time spot), instead be little grateful for things. Just because we have more of what we wanted in the first place doesn't mean we have that gives us the edge to down every other part we find annoying. Remember their are real LIVE people behind these productions, who's soul focus in life is to entertain us, and look what we do in return. Yup, thats some good lesbians.

my complaint about all the complaining...

I remember making a bet in the '80's about how many years it would be until a lesbian was a central recurring character on a t.v. show.  Things have come a long way, even IF Bette and Tina never get together again, god forbid (kidding).

I enjoy TLW, can't get into SON, am loving Bad Girls.  Geez.  Isn't it Great!

apologist for complainers

I think that the L Word comes under heightened scrutiny because it is really one of the only lesbian shows we have. So, it's forced to carry the weight of a lot of expectations in terms of representing our community, instead of being just another show on TV.

A ton of women I know watch the show -- and of course we talk about it. While I understand that it might sometimes feel like the the show gets nothing but criticism, I think it's OK to point out the cheesiness, or discuss how the show is portraying Hispanic women. It's part of the viewing experience. If we weren't talking about the show, it would probably mean we weren't watching it.
