Rant: Bad Lesbian Book SelectionK, so I go to a fairly large B&N last night and am thinking I'm gonna browse through some of their lesbian books: sexual health, fun sex stuff, politics, general non-fiction. So, I go looking and I can't find anything in any of the sections! Nothing in Women's Health. When I got the the sex part I was like: Ok, let's get it on! But, 95% of the books were about "how to keep your man." NFK. There was a Gay Kama Sutra, which sort of pissed me off even more b/c I could sort of imagine the employees ordering stuff and thinking, "Well, there's our gay sex book! We're good!" Um, we do have different anatomy...Hello, Lesbian Kama Sutra!!! So, at this point I was getting really annoyed, so I just asked this employees point blank if there were any non-fiction lesbian books or if they even had a women's studies section (which I had also not found.) So, he leads me to this bookcase in "cultural studies" next to "African American Studies" The one bookcase titled Gay/Lesbian/Women Studies, comprises: 1. GLBT sexual health/erotica 2. GLBT political texts 3. GLBT historical memoirs 4. some GLBT fiction AND 2. Women's Studies texts. To top that off, about 75% of the GLBT texts were focused on gay males. WTF? I almost put this rant in the political forum b/c, of course, it has to do with politics that all these books, that should just be scattered among the other various sections (with the exception of the Women's Studies texts) were classified under "cultural studies." And the books were really lame. How am I supposed to browse through books to know if they're any good before I buy them if I have to get them all online? I also saw a display for "African American History Month." (I guess b/c we only allowed celebrate/study/remember blacks who are citizens of the USA?) K, that's my rant! If there's one thing that this site has really made me think about, it's the extent to which "gay" in the press and media and so on really means "gay males". I think I just used to sort of accept gay male visibility as counting for everyone... but of course it doesn't, really.
It's interesting to wonder why things are skewed so heavily in that direction. Gay male pubs, bars, clubs etc tend to heavily outweigh those available to women as well. I've heard some people speculate that that's simply because there are more gay men, statistically, than lesbians... which is interesting if true... but then a lot of people seem to think that bisexual women outweigh bi men in numbers, too, so you'd think that would sort of even up the balance. But it doesn't seem to.
just a theory,
Maybe women already have more of a social network and therefor, though in general there is a need for lesbian bars etc, the need for meetingplaces specific to women is not as great?
hmmm
My B&N has a good amount of books lesbians would like...
I know I did see the Lesbian Kama Sutra at Books A Million and was surprised they even had a section for GLBT content but they did.
It may not be at the store but a lot of times you can find it online.
Amazon is pretty awesome too.
Anyway, a lot of the time I hate that a lot of attention is focused towards gay males and lesbians are an after-thought. The gay male...market is a lot bigger than the lesbian market.

A Good Book
Is hard to come by. I sympathise with your plight and totally understand the need to vent. I can only recommend that, if there's one in your area, go to Borders. Borders usually have the best selection of any book you could be looking for. Even here in AUSTRALIA, we have a fantastic Lesbian Section in our local Borders, which is saying a lot considering how homophobic the majority of Australian Book Stores can be. Don't misquote me, I'm not saying Australia is homophobic, I'm saying that bookstores are, although they are getting better!

My bookshop rant!
A few years ago when I was working as a bookslave in a different branch, I once got seriously told off for "inappropriate" behaviour with my gf...a liiiiiiiitle bit ooey-gooey in retrospect, but the way the manager reacted it was like we'd both torn our clothes off, whipped out a sack of adult pleasure products and Done the Inappropriate right in the middle of teenage fiction.
Anyway, what I meant to say was: the thing that really gets me annoyed in bookshops is when they stick anything even remotely related to LBG stuff in some secluded little corner with the porn. The Lesbian Karma Sutra, obviously, belongs in Erotica, but the Complete Lesbian Cookbook?! I wonder.
Stupid: the bookstore near
Stupid: the bookstore near my house at home (where I am two months out of the year and live with my parents, who I'm not out to) has a decent GLBT section. The bookstore near my college doesn't have a section at all. I got a stupid look when I bought my Best of the Best Erotica, which was actually amazing, and it made me feel too uncomfortable to purchase another one.
I guess that's why it's a good thing that the Internet exists.
